Drive Belt

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323 1.6L (B6E), Miata 1.6L (B6-ZE), 1.8L (BPD), MX3 1.6L (B6-ZE) and 1993-95 Protege 1.8L (BPE, BPD) Engines

Alternator

1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt midway between the pulleys on the longest accessible belt span. Press firmly on the belt with your thumb to test the belt tension. The belt should deflect 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm) if it is new or 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm) for a used belt.
2. If the belt tension is not as specified in Step 1, loosen the alternator adjustment bolt and the through-bolt. Turn the alternator adjustment screw to adjust the belt tension.
3. After adjustment, tighten the through-bolt to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm) and the adjusting bolt to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).

Power Steering/Air Conditioning

1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt midway between the pulleys on the longest accessible belt span. Press firmly on the belt with your thumb to test the belt tension. The belt should deflect 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm) if it is new or 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm) if it is used.
2. If the belt tension is not as specified in Step 1, loosen the upper and lower air conditioning compressor through-bolts.
3. Using a suitable prybar against the compressor body, move the compressor until the belt tension is as specified in Step 1.
4. After adjustment, tighten the upper and lower air conditioning compressor through-bolts.

Air Conditioning

1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt midway between the pulleys on the longest accessible belt span. Press firmly on the belt with your thumb to test the belt tension. The belt should deflect 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm) if it is new or 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm) if it is used.
2. If the belt tension is not as specified in Step 1, loosen the upper and lower air conditioning compressor through-bolts.
3. Using a suitable prybar against the compressor body, move the compressor until the belt tension is as specified in Step 1.
4. After adjustment, tighten the upper and lower air conditioning compressor through-bolts.

1995-97 Protege 1.5L (Z5D) and 1.8L (BPD) Engines

Power Steering

NOTE: This belt includes the air conditioner compressor, if equipped.

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the power steering pump belt shield.
3. Loosen the adjusting bolt, lockbolts, and through-bolt.
4. Remove the power steering belt.

   To install:

5. Install the power steering belt, and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
6. Adjust the power steering belt tension/deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.32-0.35 inch (8-9mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.36-0.39 inch (9-10mm).
7. Tighten the lockbolt to 32-38 ft. lbs. (44-51 Nm). Tighten the through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
8. Install the belt shield and tighten the attaching bolts to 61-86 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm).

Alternator

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the power steering belt.
3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and upper mounting bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Remove the right splash shield.
6. Loosen the lower through-bolt.
7. Lower the vehicle, and remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

8. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
9. Adjust the alternator belt deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.22-0.27 inch (6-7mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.24-0.29 inch (6-8mm).
10. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
12. Tighten the lower through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
13. Install the right splash shield and tighten the bolts to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Install the power steering belt.

1993-95 MX3 1.8L (K8), 1993-97 626, MX6 (KL) and 1995-97 Millenia 2.3L (KJS) and 2.5L (KLD) Engines

Alternator

NOTE: If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of normal belt rotation.

1. Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Loosen the tensioner locknut on the alternator belt tensioner.
3. Loosen the tensioner adjusting bolt until there is enough slack to remove the belt.
4. Remove the belt from each of the pulleys, remove from the vehicle and inspect the belt.

   To install:

   NOTE: Make sure that the belt is properly seated on all of the pulleys before adjusting the tensioner.

5. Route the alternator belt around the alternator and crankshaft pulleys and, if equipped, the A/C pulley.
6. Adjust the alternator to the proper deflection, and tighten the tensioner locknut to 24-34 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).

Power Steering and Water Pump

NOTE: If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of normal belt rotation.

1. Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Loosen the tensioner locknut on the power steering and water pump belt tensioner.
3. Loosen the tensioner adjusting bolt until there is enough slack to remove the belt.
4. Remove the belt from each of the pulleys, remove from the vehicle and inspect the belt.

   To install:

   NOTE: Make sure that the belt is properly seated on all of the pulleys before adjusting the tensioner.

5. Route the power steering and water pump drive belt around the three pulleys.
6. Adjust the belt to the proper tension and tighten the tensioner locknut to 24-34 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).

1995 MX3 1.6L (B6-ZE) Engines

Power Steering

NOTE: This belt includes the air conditioner compressor, if equipped.

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the power steering pump belt shield.
3. Without A/C, loosen the adjusting bolt, lockbolt, and through-bolt. With A/C, loosen the adjusting bolt and the locknut.
4. Remove the power steering belt.

   To install:

5. Install the power steering belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
6. Adjust the power steering belt tension/deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.32-0.35 inch (8-9mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.36-0.39 inch (9-10mm).
7. Without A/C, tighten the lockbolt to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm). Tighten the through-bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm). With A/C, tighten the locknut to 24-25 ft. lbs. (32-34 Nm).
8. Install the belt shield and tighten the attaching bolts to 61-86 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm).

Alternator

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the power steering belt.
3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and upper mounting bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Remove the right splash shield.
6. Loosen the lower through-bolt.
7. Lower the vehicle and remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

8. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.

1993-97 626 and MX6 2.0L (FS) Engines

Power Steering

NOTE: This belt includes the air conditioner compressor, if equipped.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the power steering pump belt shield.
3. Loosen the adjusting bolt, lockbolt, and through-bolt.
4. Remove the power steering belt.

   To install:

5. Install the power steering belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
6. Adjust the power steering belt tension/deflection. A new belt should deflect 0.30-0.35 inch (8-9 mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.32-0.37 inch (8-10 mm).
7. Tighten the lockbolt to 24-34 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
8. Tighten the through-bolt to 32-44 ft. lbs. (44-60 Nm).
9. Install the belt shield and tighten the attaching bolts to 61-86 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm).
10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the power steering belt.
3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and upper mounting bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Remove the RH splash shield.
6. Loosen the lower through-bolt.
7. Lower the vehicle and remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

8. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
9. Adjust the alternator belt tension/deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.26-0.27 inch (6.5-7.0 mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.27-0.35 inch (7-9 mm).
10. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
12. Tighten the lower through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
13. Install the RH splash shield and tighten the bolts to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Install the power steering belt.
16. Connect the negative battery cable.

1993-95 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) Engines

Power Steering

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the A/C belt.
3. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut, and through-bolt.
4. Remove the power steering belt.

   To install:

5. Install the power steering belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
6. Adjust the power steering belt tension.
7. Tighten the locknut and through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
8. Install the A/C belt.
9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator

1. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables and remove the battery.
2. Remove the power steering and A/C belts.
3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and upper mounting bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Loosen the lower through-bolt.
6. Lower the vehicle and remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

7. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
8. Adjust the alternator belt tension.
9. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
11. Tighten the lower through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Install the power steering and A/C belts.
14. Install the battery. Connect the positive and negative battery cables.

Air Conditioner

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the through-bolt.
3. Remove the A/C belt.

   To install:

4. Install the A/C and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
5. Adjust the belt tension.
6. Tighten the through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
7. Connect the negative battery cable.

1995-97 Millenia 2.3L (KJS) Engines

Alternator, A/C, and Vacuum Pump

NOTE: If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of normal belt rotation.

1. Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the right-hand splash shield and dust cover.
4. Using a wrench, turn the tensioner pulley locknut clockwise to remove tension on the belt.
5. Remove the belt from each of the pulleys, remove from the vehicle and inspect the belt.

   To install:

6. Route the alternator belt around the pulleys.
7. Install the right-hand splash shield and dust cover.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Power Steering, Supercharger, and Water Pump

NOTE: If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of normal belt rotation.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
3. Remove the right-hand splash shield and dust cover.
4. Remove the alternator belt.
5. Using a wrench, turn the tensioner pulley locknut clockwise to remove tension on the belt.
6. Remove the belt from each of the pulleys, remove from the vehicle and inspect the belt.

   To install:

7. Route the power steering drive belt around the pulleys.
8. Install the alternator belt.
9. Install the right-hand splash shield and dust cover.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.

1994-97 Miata 1.8L (BPD) Engine

Power Steering or Power Steering and A/C

NOTE: This belt includes the air conditioner compressor, if equipped.

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Loosen the adjusting bolt, oil pump bolt and both nuts.
3. Remove the power steering belt.

   To install:

4. Install the power steering belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
5. Adjust the power steering belt tension/deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.32-0.35 inch (8-9mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.36-0.39 inch (9-10mm).
6. Tighten the lockbolt to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm). Tighten the upper nut to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm), and tighten the lower locknut to 27-39 ft. lbs. (37-53 Nm).

A/C

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Loosen the adjusting bolt and the locknut.
3. Remove the A/C belt.

   To install:

4. Install the A/C belt, and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
5. Adjust the A/C belt tension/deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.32-0.35 inch (8-9mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.36-0.39 inch (9-10mm).
6. Tighten the locknut to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).

Alternator

1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Remove the power steering or A/C belt.
3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and upper mounting bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Loosen the lower through-bolt.
6. Lower the vehicle and remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

7. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulley.
8. Adjust the alternator belt deflection by turning the adjusting bolt. A new belt should deflect 0.22-0.27 inch (6-7mm), and a used belt should deflect 0.24-0.29 inch (6-8mm).
9. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
11. Tighten the lower through-bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Install the power steering belt.

1993-95 RX7 1.3L (13B) Engine

Power Steering and Air Conditioning

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the air hoses.
3. Loosen the idler pulley locknut A and the adjusting bolt B.
4. Remove the belt.

   To install:

5. Install the belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulleys.
6. Adjust the belt deflection by turning the adjusting bolt B. The deflection should be 0.14-0.15 inches (3.5-4.0 mm)
7. Tighten the locknut A to 27-39 ft. lbs. (37-53 Nm).
8. Connect the air hoses and the negative battery cable.

Alternator

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the air hoses.
3. Remove the power steering and A/C belt.
4. Loosen the air pump mounting bolts A and B.
5. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt A and locknut B.
6. Loosen adjusting bolt C.
7. Remove the alternator belt.

   To install:

8. Install the alternator belt and make sure it is correctly lined up on the pulleys.
9. Tighten the air pump mounting bolts A and B while applying pressure to the drive belt. Tighten the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
10. Adjust the alternator belt deflection by turning adjusting boltC . The deflection should be 0.24-0.27 inches (6-7 mm).
11. Tighten the mounting bolt A to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
12. Tighten the locknut B to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
13. Connect the air hoses.
14. Install the power steering belt.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
