Combination Switch

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

 1995 MX3

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Remove the driver-side side and lower panels.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and disarm the air bag.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.

    CAUTION
    Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  4. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connections from the combination switch.
  6. Remove the combination switch as an assembly.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the switch operation.
626 and MX6
Without Air Bag
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the steering column covers.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the stop ring from the shaft.
  6. Remove the switch retaining screws. Remove the combination switch from its mounting.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
With Air Bag

CAUTION
When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from the body. In the unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. This will reduce the motion of the module if it is accidently deployed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disarm the air bag system.
  2. Remove the driver-side side panel and lower panel. Disconnect the clock spring connector.
  3. Remove the steering wheel and the column covers.
  4. Disconnect the wiring and remove the screws for the combination switch. Remove the combination switch.
  5. Installation of the switch is the reverse of removal. To install the steering wheel, the clock-spring must be reset.
    1. Make sure the front wheels are straight ahead.
    2. Turn the clock-spring connector clockwise until it stops. Don't force it.
    3. Turn the clock-spring back about 2.75 turns and align the marks on the clock spring connector to the marks on the outer housing.
    4. Connect the wiring and install the steering wheel.

1993-97 929, Miata and RX7
Without Air Bag
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the steering column covers.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the stop ring from the shaft.
  6. Remove the switch retaining screws. Remove the combination switch from its mounting.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
With Air Bag

CAUTION
When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from the body.   1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and disarm the air bag system.
  2. Remove the steering wheel and the column covers.
  3. To remove the combination switch, disconnect the wiring, and remove the screws.
  4. Installation of the switch is the reverse of removal. To install the steering wheel, the clock-spring must be reset.
    1. Make sure the front wheels are straight ahead.
    2. Turn the clock-spring all the way to the right. Don't force it.
    3. Turn the clock-spring back about 2 3⁄4 turns and align the marks.
    4. Connect the wiring and install the steering wheel.
  5. Reconnect the battery cable and re-arm the air bag system.
Millenia

CAUTION

  2. Remove the air bag module and the steering wheel.

  3. Remove the steering column cover.
  4. Remove the electrical connectors and mounting screws, then remove the combination switch.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
1993-94 323, MX3 and 1993-97 Protege

CAUTION
Before removing the steering wheel or horn pad, the air bag system connectors, Orange and Blue, must be disconnected under the steering wheel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the horn cap.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connections from the combination switch.
  6. Remove the combination switch as an assembly.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the switch operation.
