REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323 and Protege
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    CAUTION
    The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR repairs and/or personal injury.

  2. After the air bag is disarmed; the battery can be connected to perform electrical testing on other systems.
  3. On models so equipped, remove the air bag mounting screws and remove the air bag from the steering wheel.

    CAUTION
    Always carry an air bag assembly with the bag and trim cover away from your body. Store the assembly with the bag and trim cover facing up; never place the assembly face down on the floor or workbench.

  4. Remove the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the 2 column cover screws and remove the cover.
  6. Remove the meter hood assembly and remove the instrument cluster screws.
  7. Carefully pull the cluster module outward and disconnect the electrical connectors and the speedometer cable connector from the instrument cluster.
  8. Remove the instrument cluster.
  9. Individual instruments may be removed as necessary.

    To install:

  10. Reconnect the instrument connectors and speedometer cable; carefully install the instrument cluster module and secure it with the screws.
  11. Reattach column covers with screws.
  12. Reinstall the steering wheel.
  13. When ready to reconnect the air bag: disconnect the battery (if not already done), connect the air bag connector, install the cover or panel and make sure no one is in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
  14. Check that all gauges are working properly, and road test for speedometer operation.
