Ignition Switch

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323 1.6L B6E), 626/MX6 2.0L (FS), 2.5L (KL), 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) MX3 K8), Protege 1.8L (BPD, BPE), Miata 1.6L (B6-ZE and 1.8L BPD) and RX7 1.3L (13B) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the steering column covers. Remove the lower panel or air duct, if necessary.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the switch screws and the combination switch.
  6. Disconnect the ignition switch wires.
  7. Use a chisel to make slots in the lock screws. Remove the screws.
  8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Install the new screws until the head twists off. Make sure the lock operates properly while tightening the new locking screws.
1995-97 Protege 1.5L (Z5D) and 1.8L (BPD) engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column cover.
  3. Remove the key reminder switch connector from the ignition switch.
  4. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
  5. Remove the mounting screws and remove the switch.

    NOTE: If the screw is difficult to remove, remove the steering shaft mounting bolts and lower panel to remove the ignition switch.

  6. Installation is the reverse of removal.
1995 MX3 1.6L (B6-ZE) and 1.8L (K8) Engines

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury. Always carry an air bag assembly, with the bag and trim cover, away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disarm and remove the air bag.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the steering column.
  5. Place the steering column securely on a workbench. Use a chisel and hammer to make slots in the head of the lock screws. Remove the screws.
  6. Remove the ignition lock assembly.

    To install:

  7. Position the ignition lock and bracket on the steering column.
  8. Install the new screws until the head twists off. Make sure the lock operates properly while tightening the new locking screws.
  9. Install the steering column, wheel and air bag.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995-97 626 and MX6 2.0L (FS) and 2.5L (KL) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column cover.
  3. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
  4. Remove the screw and the ignition switch.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
1995 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) Engine

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disarm and remove the air bag.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the steering column.
  5. Place the steering column securely on a workbench. Use a chisel and hammer to make slots in the head of the lock screws. Remove the screws.
  6. Remove the ignition lock assembly.

    To install:

  7. Position the ignition lock and bracket on the steering column.
  8. Install the new screws until the head twists off. Make sure the lock operates properly while tightening the new locking screws.
  9. Install the steering column, wheel and air bag.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995-97 Miata 1.8L (BPD) Engines
  1. If equipped, deactivate the audio antitheft system.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the steering column cover.
  4. Disconnect the connector and remove the ignition switch.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
1995 RX7 1.3L engine

CAUTION
The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury. Always carry an air bag assembly with the bag and trim cover away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the steering column covers. Remove the lower panel or air duct, if necessary.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the switch screws and the combination switch.
  6. Disconnect the ignition switch wires.
  7. Remove the steering column to dash panel structure mounting bolts and carefully lower the steering column.
  8. Using a chisel, make slots in the steering lock mounting screws. Remove the screws.

    To install:

  9. Install the steering lock to the steering column with new bolts. Tighten the bolts until the heads break off.
  10. Reconnect the ignition switch wiring harness.
  11. Carefully reposition the steering column to the dash panel structure and secure the steering column with the mounting bolts.
  12. Reinstall the combination switch with its mounting screws and reconnect the electrical connectors.
  13. Reinstall the steering column covers and the steering wheel.
  14. Install the steering wheel cover or air bag assembly.
  15. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
1995-97 Millenia 2.3L (KJS) and 2.5L (KLS) engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work. This will allow time for the SRS backup power supply system to deplete its stored energy.
  2. Remove the lap louver duct.
  3. Remove the screw and withdrawal the ignition switch from the steering lock assembly.
  4. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector and remove the switch.
  5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
