Park/Neutral Safety Switch

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993 MX3 1.6L (B6-ZE), 1993-94 323 1.6L B6E), Miata 1.6L (B6-ZE), 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) and 1993-95 Protege 1.8L(BPE, BPD) and RX7 1.3L (13B) Engines
  1. Remove the shift cable or selector rod from the manual lever shaft on the transmission.
  2. Remove the electrical connector from the switch.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the switch.

    To Install And Adjust:

  4. Install the park/neutral switch to the transmission manual shift lever with the mounting bolts, but do not tighten the bolts until the adjustment is made.
  5. Make sure that the transmission manual shaft lever is in the N position.
  6. Align the holes of the park/neutral switch and the manual shaft by inserting a 0.16 in. (4.0mm) outer diameter pin.
  7. Tighten the park/neutral switch mounting bolts to 22-34 in. lbs. (2.5-3.9 Nm). Remove the aligning pin.
  8. Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the shift cable or selector rod to the manual lever shaft on the transmission.
  9. Check for proper operation.
1995-97 Protege 1.5L (Z5D), 1.8L (BPD), 1993-95 MX3 1.6L (B6E), 1.8L (K8), 1993-97 626 and MX6 2.0L (FS) and 2.5L (KL) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the resonance chamber, fresh air duct and air cleaner assembly.
  3. Remove the spring pin and clip and disconnect the shift cable at the transmission.
  4. Disconnect the neutral safety switch connector.
  5. Remove the manual shaft nut, lockwasher and lever.
  6. Remove the switch mounting bolts and the switch.

    To install:

  7. Rotate the manual shaft to N.
  8. Turn the neutral safety switch so the neutral mark is in line with the flat, straight surfaces on either side of the manual shaft.
  9. Loosely tighten the switch bolts and adjust the switch. Tighten the bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  10. Install the manual shaft nut, lockwasher and lever. Torque to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  11. Connect the neutral safety switch electrical connector.
  12. Connect the shift cable at the transmission. Install the spring pin and clip.
  13. Install the resonance chamber, fresh air duct and air cleaner assembly.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) Engine

NOTE: The switch is called a P position switch, and the vehicle can only be started with the transmission in park.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the power window switch.
  3. Remove the rear console.
  4. Remove the boot panel.
  5. Remove the ashtray.
  6. Remove the radio.
  7. Remove the front console.
  8. Shift the selector lever to the N position. Remove the spring pin and washers, and disconnect the selector rod. Lift the selector lever.
  9. Disconnect the P position switch connector.
  10. Remove the switch.

    To install:

  11. Install the P position switch.
  12. Connect the P position switch connector.
  13. Lower the selector lever, position the selector rod, and install a new spring pin and washers.
  14. Install the front console, radio, ashtray and boot panel.
  15. Install the rear console and power window switch.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995-97 Millenia 2.3L (KJS) and 2.5L (KLD) Engines
GF4A-EL Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector.
  4. Remove the nut and the clip, and disconnect the selector cable.
  5. Remove the transaxle manual shaft nut, lock washer and nut.
  6. Remove the mounting screws and the range switch.

    To install:

  7. Install the transaxle range switch over the manual shaft lever.
  8. Rotate the manual shaft to the neutral position.
  9. Turn the transaxle range switch so that the neutral mark is in line with the flat, straight surfaces on either side of the manual shaft.
  10. Hand tighten the range switch mounting screws.
  11. Verify that there is continuity between terminals A and H of the range switch connector.
  12. Torque the transaxle range switch mounting screws to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  13. Install the manual shaft lever, lock washer and nut. Torque the nut to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  14. Verify that the selector lever range position and transaxle range switch are aligned, then connect with the nut and clip.
  15. Reconnect the range switch connector and install the air cleaner assembly.
  16. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.

LJ4A-EL Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
  2. Remove the selector rod from the manual shaft lever.
  3. Move the manual shaft to the N position.
  4. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector, remove the mounting bolts and remove the switch.

    To install:

  5. Install the transaxle range switch and hand tighten the mounting bolts.
  6. Align the holes of the range switch and the manual shaft lever by inserting a pin with an outside diameter of 0.157 in. (4 mm).
  7. Tighten the range switch mounting bolts to 22-34 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  8. Reconnect the range switch connector and install the selector rod to the manual shaft lever.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
1995-97 Miata 1.8L (BPD) Engine

NOTE: The switch is called a P position switch, and the vehicle can only be started with the transmission in park.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the rear console.
  3. Remove the screws and lift the indicator panel.
  4. Disconnect the P position switch connector.
  5. Remove the switch.

    To install:

  6. Install the P position switch.
  7. Connect the P position switch connector.
  8. Lower the indicator panel, and install the mounting screws.
  9. Install the rear console.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
