Automatic Transaxle Assembly

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993–94 323 and Protege with FA4A Transaxle
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front wheels. Remove the battery and battery box and the air cleaner and ducting.
  2. Remove the splash shield and drain the transaxle oil.
  3. Disconnect the speedometer cable, throttle cable, shift cable and the wiring from the transaxle.
  4. Disconnect the wiring and remove the starter.
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold and the catalytic converter and remove the pipe.
  6. Disconnect the tie rod ends and lower ball joints and remove the halfshafts. Use special tool 49 G030 455 or equivalent to hold the differential side gears in place when the halfshafts are removed.
  7. If equipped, remove the torque converter–to–flywheel nuts.
  8. Disconnect the oil cooler hoses and plug them to prevent leakage.
  9. Install the necessary lifting equipment and support the engine from above. Remove the lower mounting frame and support the transaxle from below with a jack.
  10. Remove the front and left rear mounts and allow the engine/transaxle to tilt towards the left.
  11. Remove the bolts and slide the transaxle away from the engine to lower it out of the vehicle. Do not let the torque converter fall out.

    To install:

  12. Make sure the torque converter is properly placed and carefully guide the transaxle into place. Start all the transaxle–to–engine bolts, then torque them to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  13. Install the left rear mount but do not torque the bolts yet.
  14. Install the torque converter–to–flywheel nuts and torque to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  15. Install the halfshafts, making sure the inner joint is firmly seated into place. Torque the extension shaft bracket bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  16. Assemble the suspension. Torque the lower ball joint pinch bolt and the tie rod end nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). If equipped with a stabilizer bar, adjust the link with 34 in. (19mm) of thread showing above the locknut.
  17. Install the front mount to the transaxle and torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  18. Install the lower mounting frame and torque the frame–to–body nuts and bolts A to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm). Torque the mount–to–frame nuts and bolts B to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  19. Connect the cooler hoses, making sure the clamp does not interfere with other parts.
  20. Connect the shift cable, speedometer cable, throttle cable and the wiring.
  21. Install the starter and connect the wiring.
  22. Install the splash shields and wheels.
  23. Install the air cleaner and battery.

1995–97 Protege with FA4A-EL Transaxle
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  3. Remove the battery and battery cover.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  5. Remove the battery carrier.
  6. Disconnect the solenoid connector and the transaxle range switch connector.
  7. Disconnect the selector cable.
  8. Disconnect the speedometer sensor connector.
  9. Remove the harness bracket.
  10. Disconnect the throttle cable.
  11. Remove the front wheels.
  12. Remove the splash shields.
  13. Remove the transverse member, if equipped.
  14. Disconnect the tie-rod ends.
  15. Disconnect the stabilizer control links.
  16. Disconnect the lower arm by removing the cinch bolt from the lower arm ball joints. Pry the lower arm out of the knuckle.
  17. Support the engine and remove the engine mounting member.

  18. Remove the left and right driveshafts and install special tool 49 G030 455 or equivalent to hold the side gears.
  19. Remove the joint shaft.
  20. Remove the manifold bracket.
  21. Remove the starter.
  22. Remove the front engine/trans mount.
  23. Remove the rear engine/trans mount.
  24. Disconnect the inner and outer oil hoses.
  25. Remove the side engine/trans mount.

  26. Hold the drive plate and remove the converter nuts.
  27. Support the transaxle on a jack and remove the mounting bolts.
  28. Remove the transaxle.

    To install:

  29. Support the transaxle on a jack and lift it into place. Align the transaxle with the engine and install the mounting bolts. Torque to 41–59 ft. lbs. (55–80 Nm).
  30. Hold the driveplate and install the torque converter mount nuts. 26–36 ft. lbs. (35–49 Nm).
  31. Install the side engine/trans mount. Loosely tighten the nuts of the transaxle side. Tighten the nuts and bolts of the body side. Torque to 32–44 ft. lbs. (44–60 Nm). Tighten the nuts of the transaxle side, torque to 50–68 ft. lbs.
  32. Connect the inner and outer oil hoses.
  33. Install the rear engine/trans mount. Torque the bolts to 50–68 ft. lbs. (67–93 Nm).
  34. Install the front engine/trans mount. Torque the mount bracket to the transaxle to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm). Loosely tighten the nuts and bolts of the engine mount rubber, then torque to 50–68 ft. lbs. (67–98 Nm).
  35. Install the starter.
  36. Install the manifold bracket.
  37. Insert the joint shaft into the transaxle. Install the joint shaft to the cylinder block and tighten the bolts in sequence (counterclockwise). Torque to 32–46 ft. lbs. (42–62 Nm).
  38. Install the driveshafts, make sure that the shafts are properly installed and do not pull out.
  39. Replace the engine mounting member. Install the mounting nuts/bolts and torque the nuts/bolts at the far corners to 48–65 ft. lbs. (64–89 Nm), torque the remaining two nuts to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm).
  40. Connect the lower arm to the knuckle.
  41. Install the stabilizer control link.
  42. Connect the tie-rod ends.
  43. Install the transverse member, if removed.
  44. Install the splash shields.
  45. Install the wheels.
  46. Connect the throttle cable.
  47. Install the harness bracket.
  48. Connect the vehicle speedometer sensor connector.
  49. Connect the selector cable.
  50. Connect the transaxle range switch connector.
  51. Connect the solenoid connector.
  52. Install the battery carrier.
  53. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  54. Install the battery and battery cover.
  55. Test drive the vehicle. Check for proper operation in all gear ranges.
1993–95 MX3 with FA4A and FA4A-EL Transaxles
  1. If equipped with 1.8L engine, relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies, and splash shields.
  4. Disconnect the air flow meter connector, and remove the resonance duct and air cleaner assembly.
  5. If equipped with 1.8L engine, remove the strut bar from between the strut towers.
  6. Disconnect the positive battery cable and disconnect the wiring harness from the battery tray. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  7. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
  8. Remove the clip from the cable housing and the spring clip from the transaxle lever, then remove the shift cable.
  9. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors for the inhibitor switch and solenoid valve. Remove the bolt from the harness bracket and position the harness aside.
  10. Remove the throttle cable at the throttle body and routing brackets. Disconnect and plug the oil cooler hoses.
  11. If equipped with 1.8L engine, disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors and remove the fuel filter and the transverse member. If equipped with 1.6L engine, remove the intake manifold support bracket.
  12. Remove the starter, and the front exhaust pipe.
  13. Remove the pinch bolt and separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin and nuts and separate the tie rod ends from the knuckles.
  14. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the lower control arms. Remove the brake hose and ABS sensor cable clips.
  15. Support the engine using engine support tool 49 G017 5A0 or equivalent. Remove the nuts and bolt and remove the engine mount member.
  16. Remove the halfshafts and intermediate shaft. Remove the left side transaxle mount.
  17. On 1.8L engine, remove the lower converter housing cover. Hold the flexplate with a small prybar and remove the torque converter nuts.
  18. On 1.6L engine, insert a small prybar through the converter housing service hole and hold the flexplate. Remove the cover from the oil pan side service hole and remove the torque converter nuts.
  19. Remove the front transaxle mount.
  20. Loosen the engine support tool to lean the engine toward the transaxle. Support the transaxle with a jack and remove the transaxle mounting bolts. Carefully lower the transaxle from the vehicle, being careful not to drop the torque converter.

    To install:

  21. Make sure the torque converter is completely installed in the transaxle. Lay a straightedge across the bellhousing and measure the distance to the torque converter (not the stud); it should be 0.535 in. (13.6mm). If the distance is less than specification, push the converter into the pump while rotating it, to properly engage the pump drive.
  22. Raise the transaxle into position, making sure the converter studs align with the flexplate holes, and install the transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  23. Install the front transaxle mount and tighten the bolt(s) to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  24. Hold the flexplate with a small prybar and tighten the converter nuts, gradually and evenly to 25–36 ft. lbs. (34–49 Nm). On 1.6L engine, install the service hole cover. On 1.8L engine, install the access plate.
  25. Install the left side transaxle mount. Tighten the mount-to-body bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm) and the mount-to-transaxle nuts to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
  26. Install the halfshafts.
  27. Install the engine mount member. Tighten the mount member-to-mount nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and the mount member-to-body nuts/bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm). Remove the engine support tool.
  28. Attach the clip the brake hose and ABS sensor cable. Attach the stabilizer links to the lower control arms and tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  29. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm). Install new cotter pins. Connect the lower arm ball joints to the steering knuckles and install the pinch bolts and nuts. Tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  30. Install the front exhaust pipe, using new gaskets. Tighten the pipe-to-converter nuts to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm) and the pipe-to-manifold nuts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm). Connect the oxygen sensor connectors on 1.8L engine.
  31. On 1.6L engine, install the intake manifold support bracket. On 1.8L engine, install the transverse member and tighten the bolts to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  32. Install the starter. On 1.8L engine, install the fuel filter and connect the fuel lines.
  33. Connect the oil cooler hoses and the throttle cable. Position the harness bracket and secure with the bolt.
  34. Connect the solenoid valve and inhibitor switch connectors. Connect the selector cable to the transaxle. Install the cable housing clip and a new manual lever spring clip.
  35. Connect the speedometer cable or speed sensor connector, as necessary. Install the battery tray and secure the wiring harness with the bolt. Install the battery.
  36. On 1.8L engine, install the strut bar and tighten the nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  37. Install the air cleaner assembly and resonance duct. Connect the air flow meter connector.
  38. Install the splash shields and the wheel and tire assemblies. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Connect the battery cables. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks and proper transaxle operation.
1993–97 626 and MX6 with GFA4-EL Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery and battery tray.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  3. Remove the air ducts and the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Remove the housing clip and remove the selector cable from the transaxle.
  5. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors for the inhibitor switch, solenoid valve, oxygen sensor, vehicle speed sensor and vehicle pulse generator. Disconnect the ground wires and remove the necessary wiring harness brackets.
  6. Remove the fuel filter mounting nuts and position the filter aside, leaving the fuel line attached. Remove the engine mount stay.
  7. If equipped with 2.5L engine, remove the starter. Disconnect and plug the oil cooler hoses.
  8. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies and the splash shields. Remove the transverse member.
  9. If equipped with 2.5L engine, remove the front exhaust pipe.
  10. Remove the pinch bolts from the steering knuckles. Pry the lower control arms down to separate the ball joints from the knuckles.
  11. Remove the cotter pins and nuts and separate the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Remove the nuts and disconnect the stabilizer links from the lower control arms.
  12. Remove the brake hose clips from the struts and remove the ABS speed sensor harness mounting nuts.
  13. Separate the right side halfshaft from the intermediate shaft using a hammer and brass drift. Pry the left side shaft from the transaxle using a prybar inserted between the transaxle and the inner CV-joint. Be careful not to damage the oil seal.
  14. Suspend the halfshafts with rope, in a level position. Insert plug tools 49 G030 455 or equivalent into the differential side gears to keep them from becoming mispositioned.
  15. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  16. If equipped with 2.0L engine, remove the intake manifold support bracket and remove the starter.
  17. Remove the engine mount rubber from the right side of the engine mount member. Remove the mount-to-transaxle bolts from the rear transaxle mount.
  18. Support the engine using engine support tool 49 G017 5A0 or equivalent. Remove the engine mount member nuts and bolts and remove the engine mount member.
  19. If equipped with 2.5L engine, remove the torque converter access plate. On 2.0L engine, remove the seal rubber from the transaxle case near the starter mounting hole.
  20. Hold the flexplate with a small prybar and remove the torque converter nuts.
  21. Remove the left side transaxle mount.
  22. Loosen the engine support tool and lean the engine toward the transaxle. Support the transaxle with a jack and remove the transaxle mounting bolts. Carefully lower the transaxle from the vehicle, being careful not to drop the torque converter.
  23. Remove the front transaxle mount.

    To install:

  24. Make sure the torque converter is completely installed in the transaxle. Lay a straightedge across the bellhousing and measure the distance to the torque converter (not the stud); it should be 0.602 in. (15.3mm) on 2.0L engine or 0.551 in. (14mm) on 2.5L engine. If the distance is less than specification, push the converter into the pump while rotating it, to properly engage the pump drive.
  25. Install the front transaxle mount.
  26. Raise the transaxle into position, making sure the torque converter studs align with the flexplate holes, and install the transaxle mounting bolts.
  27. On 2.5L engine, tighten the transaxle mounting bolts to 73 ft. lbs. (99 Nm). On 2.0L engine, tighten bolts A to 73 ft. lbs. (99 Nm), bolts B to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm) and bolt C to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  28. Hold the flexplate with the small prybar and install the torque converter nuts. Tighten the bolts, gradually and evenly, to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). On 2.5L engine, install the torque converter access plate. On 2.0L engine, install the seal rubber.
  29. Install the left side transaxle mount and loosely tighten the bolts and nuts.
  30. Use the engine support tool to make sure the transaxle bolt holes and the rear transaxle mount align. Install the bolts and tighten to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
  31. Install the engine mount member, making sure the mount rubbers are installed properly.
  32. Install the mount member-to-body bolts/nuts and tighten to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm). Loosely tighten the mount member-to-mount nuts.
  33. Tighten the left transaxle mount mount-to-transaxle nuts and bolt to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm). Tighten the mount through-bolt to 86 ft. lbs. (116 Nm).
  34. Remove the engine support tool. Tighten the mount member-to-mount nuts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  35. Install the mount rubber on the right side of the mount member. Tighten the bolts to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
  36. If equipped with 2.0L engine, install the starter and the intake manifold support bracket.
  37. Remove the plug tool from the differential side gear. Install the intermediate shaft into the transaxle. Install the support bearing to the engine and tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  38. Remove the plug from the other differential side gear. Install a new circlip on the halfshaft with end gap facing upward. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle, being careful not to damage the seal. Make sure the circlip seats in the differential side gear, by pulling out on the shaft; it must not pull out.
  39. Install a new circlip on the end of the other halfshaft and connect it to the intermediate shaft.
  40. Connect the lower ball joints to the steering knuckles. Install the pinch bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  41. Connect the stabilizer links to the lower control arms and tighten the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm). Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  42. If equipped with 2.5L engine, install the front exhaust pipe, using new gaskets and install the starter.
  43. Install the transverse member and tighten the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (131 Nm). Install the splash shields and the wheel and tire assemblies.
  44. Connect the oil cooler hoses. Install the engine mount stay.
  45. Install the harness brackets and the ground wires. Connect the electrical connectors.
  46. Position the fuel filter and install the mounting bolts. Install the selector cable to the cable bracket and install the clip. Connect the cable to the transaxle lever.
  47. Install the air cleaner assembly and ducts. Install the battery and battery tray.
  48. Connect the battery cables. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks and proper transaxle operation.
1995–97 626 and MX6 with LA4A-EL Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery and battery tray.
  2. Remove the resonance chamber, fresh air duct and the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Label and disconnect the Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor electrical connector. Remove the two MLP sensor bolts and the sensor.
  4. Remove the ground wire bracket and the ground wire. Label and disconnect the solenoid body connector.
  5. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
  6. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector.
  7. Remove the oil filler tube.
  8. Remove the two ignition coil nuts and position the ignition coil out of the way. Remove the three speed control servo nuts and position the speed control servo out of the way.
  9. Remove the three ignition coil mounting strap bolts.
  10. Disconnect the wire harness clips from the ignition coil mounting straps. Remove the ignition coil mounting straps.
  11. Remove the 2 fuel filter bracket nuts from the left transaxle mount. Position the filter and bracket, aside, without disconnecting the fuel lines.
  12. Remove the two emission harness protector nuts.
  13. Support the engine. Remove the number one and number four engine mounts.
  14. Remove the shift cable from the cable bracket. Remove the two cable bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
  15. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies and the splash shields.
  16. Disconnect the Transmission Speed Sensor (TSS) connector.
  17. Remove the 6 transverse member bolts and the transverse member. Remove the 6 transaxle cradle nuts and 2 bolts and remove the transaxle cradle.
  18. Remove the engine mounting member (transaxle cradle).
  19. Remove the pinch bolts from the steering knuckles. Pry the lower control arms down to separate the ball joints from the knuckles.
  20. Remove the cotter pins and nuts and separate the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Remove the nuts and disconnect the stabilizer links from the lower control arms.
  21. Remove the brake hose clips from the struts, and (if equipped) remove the ABS speed sensor harness mounting nuts.
  22. Separate the right side halfshaft from the intermediate shaft using a hammer and brass drift. Pry the left side shaft from the transaxle using a prybar inserted between the transaxle and the inner CV-joint. Be careful not to damage the oil seal.
  23. Suspend the halfshafts with rope, in a level position. Insert plug tools 49 G030 455 or equivalent into the differential side gears to keep them from becoming mispositioned.
  24. Remove the intermediate/joint shaft.
  25. Remove the two starter motor bolts.
  26. Remove the intake manifold support and the starter.
  27. Remove the seal rubber located next to the starter opening. Use a small prybar to hold the flexplate and reach through the opening to remove the torque converter nuts.
  28. Safely support the transaxle from below. Remove the four front transaxle mount bracket bolts, and remove the bracket.
  29. Remove the number two engine mount.
  30. Disconnect and plug the oil cooler lines.
  31. Remove the top three transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts.
  32. Remove the two remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  33. Remove the three engine-to-transaxle bolts.
  34. Use a small prybar to separate the transaxle from the engine. Slightly tilt the transaxle and engine to ease removal.
  35. Remove the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle from the vehicle.

    To install:

  36. Raise the transaxle into position. Align the torque converter studs with the flexplate.
  37. Install the transaxle-to-engine and engine-to-transaxle bolts. Tighten bolts B to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm). Tighten the transaxle-to-engine boltsC to 14–18 ft. lbs. (19–25 Nm).

  38. Remove the transaxle support.
  39. Install transaxle-to-engine bolts A and tighten to 66–86 ft. lbs. (89–117 Nm).
  40. Connect the oil cooler hoses.
  41. Install the number two engine mount. Install the front transaxle support bracket.
  42. Install the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  43. Install the torque converter access plug.
  44. Install the starter. Do not install the two upper starter motor bolts at this time
  45. Install the intake manifold support bracket. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  46. Install the two upper starter motor bolts and tighten to 23–34 ft. lbs. (31–46 Nm).
  47. Remove the plug tool from the differential side gear. Install the intermediate/joint shaft into the transaxle. Install the support bearing to the engine and tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  48. Remove the plug from the other differential side gear. Install a new circlip on the halfshaft with end gap facing upward. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle, being careful not to damage the seal. Make sure the circlip seats in the differential side gear, by pulling out on the shaft; it must not pull out.
  49. Install a new circlip on the end of the other halfshaft and connect it to the intermediate shaft.
  50. Connect the lower ball joints to the steering knuckles. Install the pinch bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  51. Connect the stabilizer links to the lower control arms and tighten the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm). Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  52. Install the transaxle cradle. Tighten the cradle-to-body bolts and nuts to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm). Tighten the cradle-to-front mount nuts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm) and the cradle-to-rear mount nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  53. Install the transverse member and tighten the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (131 Nm).
  54. Connect the TSS and VSS connectors.
  55. Install the splash shields and the wheel and tire assemblies. Lower the vehicle.
  56. Install the shift cable bracket.
  57. Install the number one and number four engine mounts. Remove the engine support.
  58. Install the two emission harness protector nuts.
  59. Install the two fuel filter bracket nuts and tighten to 71–97 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm).
  60. Position the ignition coil mounting straps, and install the wire harness clips and the three strap bolts.
  61. Position the speed control servo, and install and tighten the three nuts.
  62. Position the ignition coil and install the two nuts. Tighten the nuts to 71–88 inch lbs (8–10 Nm).
  63. Install the oil filler tube.
  64. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
  65. Install the MLP sensor and the two MLP sensor bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Connect the MLP sensor electrical connector
  66. Install the air cleaner assembly, fresh air duct and resonance chamber. Install the battery tray and battery. Connect the battery cables.
  67. Install the ground wire bracket and the ground wire. Connect the solenoid body connector.
  68. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid. Run the engine and check for leaks. Road test and check for proper transaxle operation.
1995–97 Millenia with GFA4 Transaxle
  1. Remove the battery, battery cover and the carrier.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  5. Disconnect the selector cable at the transaxle.
  6. Disconnect the transaxle range sensor connector and the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
  7. Disconnect the solenoid valve connector.
  8. Remove the harness bracket and the selector cable bracket.
  9. Remove the No. 1 engine mount bracket stay.
  10. Remove the starter.
  11. Disconnect the speedometer sensor connector.
  12. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  13. Disconnect the O2 sensor connector.
  14. Remove the wheels.
  15. Remove the splash shields and the undercover.
  16. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  17. Disconnect the upper lateral link (left side).
  18. Remove the lower ball joint.
  19. Remove the right side halfshaft and the joint shaft.
  20. Support the engine from above and remove the No. 4 engine mount.
  21. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 engine mount nuts.
  22. Remove the engine mounting member.
  23. Disconnect the oil hose.
  24. Remove the undercover and the transaxle to engine undercover.
  25. Hold the driveplate and remove the torque converter nuts.
  26. Remove the No. 2 engine mount and the bracket.
  27. Remove the left side upper link and separate the left side halfshaft from the transaxle.
  28. Remove the No. 1 engine mount bolts.
  29. Loosen the engine support and lean the engine towards the transaxle.
  30. Support the transaxle on a jack. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts and remove the transaxle.

    To install:

  31. Support the transaxle on a jack and place into position at the engine. Install the mounting bolts, torque to 50–73 ft. lbs. (68–99 Nm).
  32. Install the torque converter bolts, torque to 28–44 ft. lbs. (38–60 Nm).
  33. Loosely tighten the No. 4 engine mount nuts.
  34. Use the engine support to make sure that the transaxle bolt holes and the No. 1 engine mount are aligned.

    WARNING
    Align the transaxle bolt holes and the engine mount exactly. Any misalignment could result in bolt and bolt holes becoming damaged or stripped during installation.

  35. Torque the No. 1 engine mount bolts to 55–77.3 ft. lbs. (75–104 Nm).
  36. Install the left side halfshaft.
  37. Install the No. 2 engine mount bracket and engine mount.
  38. Install the undercover and the engine to trans. undercover.
  39. Connect the oil hose.
  40. Install the engine mounting member, making sure that the No. 2 engine mount stud bolt passes through the No. 2 engine mount bracket installation hole.
  41. Torque the mounting member outer bolts to 50–68 ft. lbs. (67–93 Nm), torque the engine mount to member bolt to 55–77.3 ft. lbs. (75–104 Nm).
  42. Install the No. 1 engine mount nut.
  43. Install the No. 4 engine mount.
  44. Install the joint shaft and the right side halfshaft.
  45. Install the lower ball joint.
  46. Install the left side upper lateral link.
  47. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  48. Install the undercover and the splash shields.
  49. Install the wheels.
  50. Connect the O2 sensor connector.
  51. Install the intake manifold cover.
  52. Connect the speedometer sensor connector.
  53. Install the starter.
  54. Install the No. 1 engine mount bracket stay.
  55. Install the selector cable bracket and the harness bracket.
  56. Connect the solenoid valve connector.
  57. Connect the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
  58. Connect the transmission range sensor connector.
  59. Connect the selector cable.
  60. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  61. Install the battery carrier, battery and battery cover.
  62. Fill the transaxle with the proper fluid.
1995–97 Millenia with a LJA4 Transaxle
  1. Remove the battery, battery cover and the carrier.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  5. Remove the resonance chamber.
  6. Disconnect the selector cable at the transaxle.
  7. Disconnect the transaxle range sensor connector and the output speed sensor connector.
  8. Disconnect the solenoid valve connector.
  9. Remove the harness bracket and the control cable bracket.
  10. Remove the rear intercooler.
  11. Remove the bracket and remove the starter.
  12. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
  13. Remove the front intercooler.
  14. Remove the electric coolant fan assembly.
  15. Remove the wheels.
  16. Remove the locknut.
  17. Remove the splash shields and the undercover.
  18. Remove the fresh air duct.
  19. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  20. Disconnect the lower ball joint.
  21. Disconnect the upper lateral link (left side).
  22. Remove the lower arm.
  23. Remove the right side halfshaft and the joint shaft.
  24. Remove the stabilizer control link.
  25. Remove the left side halfshaft.
  26. Remove the drive belts and timing belt.
  27. Remove the power steering pump and the A/C compressor.
  28. Remove the shift control rod and the ATF filler tube.
  29. Support the engine from above, loosen the No. 3 engine mount bolt and remove the No. 4 engine mount.
  30. Remove the No. 1 engine mount nut an the engine mount damper. Remove the No. 2 engine mount nut.
  31. Remove the undercover.
  32. Hold the driveplate and remove the torque converter nuts.
  33. Remove the No. 1 engine mount bolts.
  34. Remove the engine mount member.
  35. Loosen the engine support and lean the engine towards the transaxle.
  36. Support the transaxle on a jack. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts and remove the transaxle.

    To install:

  37. Support the transaxle on a jack and place into position at the engine. Install the mounting bolts, torque to 50–73 ft. lbs. (68–99 Nm).
  38. Install the torque converter bolts, torque to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm).
  39. Install the No. 4 engine mount bracket.
  40. Install the engine mounting member making sure that the No. 2 engine mount stud bolt passes through the No. 2 engine mount bracket installation hole.
  41. Torque the mounting member outer bolts to 50–68 ft. lbs. (67–93 Nm), torque the engine mount to member bolt to 55–77.3 ft. lbs. (75–104 Nm).
  42. Tighten the No. 3 engine mount bolt, torque to 55–77 ft. lbs. (75–104 Nm).
  43. Use the engine support to make sure that the transaxle bolt holes and the No. 1 engine mount are aligned.

    WARNING
    Align the transaxle bolt holes and the engine mount exactly. Any misalignment could result in the bolt and bolt holes becoming damaged or stripped during installation.

  44. Torque the No. 1 engine mount bolts to 55–77.3 ft. lbs. (75–104 Nm).
  45. Install the No. 4 engine mount onto the vehicle, torque to 32–44 ft. lbs. (44–60 Nm).
  46. Use a jack to make sure that the No. 4 mounting bolt holes and the bracket are aligned, then torque the bolts to 50–68 ft. lbs. (67–93 Nm). Remove the jack.
  47. Shift the selector lever to the PARK position and move the manual shaft to the PARK position. Install the shift control rod and torque the mounting nut to 12–16 ft. lbs. (16–22 Nm).
  48. Install the ATF filler tube.
  49. Install the A/C compressor and the power steering pump.
  50. Install the timing belt and the drive belts.
  51. Install the left side halfshaft.
  52. Install the stabilizer control link, joint shaft and the right side halfshaft.
  53. Install the lower arm, upper lateral link and the ball joint.
  54. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  55. Install the fresh air duct.
  56. Install the undercover and the splash shields.
  57. Install the locknut.
  58. Install the wheels.
  59. Install the electric coolant fan assembly.
  60. Install the front intercooler.
  61. Connect the speed sensor connector.
  62. Install the starter and bracket.
  63. Install the rear intercooler.
  64. Install the control cable bracket and the harness bracket.
  65. Connect the solenoid valve connector.
  66. Connect the output speed sensor connector.
  67. Connect the transmission range sensor connector.
  68. Connect the selector cable.
  69. Install the resonance chamber.
  70. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  71. Install the battery carrier, battery and battery cover.
  72. Fill the transaxle with the proper fluid.
