REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323, MX3 and Protege
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump. If equipped, disconnect the pressure switch connector.
  2. Remove the pump drive belt.
  3. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pulley nut to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm). Adjust the belt tension and fill and bleed the system.
1995-97 Protege

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the bottom locknut from the pump bracket.
  3. Loosen the adjusting nut and remove the drive belt.
  4. Disconnect the pressure pipe and the return hose. Plug the lines to prevent fluid spills.
  5. Disconnect the pump switch connector.
  6. Remove the pump bracket.
  7. Remove the remaining pump mount bolts and remove the pump.

    To install:

  8. Replace the pump and install the mounting nuts and bolts. Torque the bracket nuts and bolts to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm). Torque the pump to bracket mount bolt to 32-44 ft. lbs. (44-60 Nm).
  9. Connect the pump switch connector.
  10. Connect the return hose and pressure pipe.
  11. Replace the drive belt and properly adjust the tension
  12. Install the bottom bracket locknut, torque to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995 MX3
1.6L (B6E) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the bolt located at the pump pulley.
  3. Remove the two nuts from the adjusting bracket.
  4. Remove the adjusting bolt from the pump bracket.
  5. Remove the pump drive belt.
  6. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump. Remove the O-rings
  7. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through one of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  8. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  9. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.

    To install:

  10. Position the pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
  11. Unplug and connect the return hose to the pump. Unplug the pressure hose, and install the hose using a new O-rings. Tighten the bolt to 12-17 ft. lbs. (16-23 Nm).
  12. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  13. Install the pump bracket, and torque the mounting bolts to 24-33 ft. lbs. (31-46 Nm).
  14. Position the pulley on the pump shaft, and fasten the washer and nut onto the end of the shaft. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through one of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Tighten the pulley nut to 37-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm).
  15. Install the drive belt and the adjusting bolt.
  16. Install the nuts onto the adjusting bracket, and the bolt at the pulley.
  17. Adjust the belt tension, and fill and bleed the system. Check for leaks.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
1.8L (FS) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  3. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump.
  4. Remove the pump drive belt.
  5. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through one of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  6. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump along with the bracket as an assembly.

    To install:

  7. Position the pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the upper bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm). Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  8. Position the pulley on the pump shaft, and fasten the washer and nut onto the end of the shaft. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through one of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Tighten the pulley nut to 37-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm).
  9. Install the drive belt.
  10. Unplug and connect the return hose to the pump. Unplug the pressure hose, and install the hose using a new washer. Tighten the bolt to 18-26 ft. lbs. (24-35 Nm).
  11. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  12. Adjust the belt tension, and fill and bleed the system. Check for leaks.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
1993-97 626 and MX6
2.5L (KL) Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the transverse member.
  3. Remove the locknut that secures the idler pulley, and remove the idler pulley and bearing.
  4. Remove the adjusting bolt from the pump bracket.
  5. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump.
  6. Remove the pump drive belt.
  7. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through 1 of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  8. Remove the hose and pump brackets. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  9. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.

    To install:

  10. Position the pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 24-33 ft. lbs. (31-46 Nm).
  11. Unplug and connect the return hose to the pump. Unplug the pressure hose, and install the hose using a new washer. Tighten the bolt to 22-32 ft. lbs. (30-44 Nm).
  12. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  13. Install the pump bracket, and torque the mounting bolts to 24-33 ft. lbs. (31-46 Nm).
  14. Install the hose bracket onto the pump bracket and tighten the pressure hose mounting bolt through the bracket at 61-87 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  15. Position the pulley on the pump shaft, and fasten the washer and nut onto the end of the shaft. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through 1 of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Tighten the pulley nut to 37-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm).
  16. Install the drive belt and the adjusting bolt.
  17. Install the idler pulley and bearing. Tighten the locknut to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
  18. Install the transverse member and tighten the mounting bolts to 69-96 ft. lbs. (94-131 Nm).
  19. Adjust the belt tension, and fill and bleed the system. Check for leaks.
  20. Connect the negative battery cable.
2.0L (FS) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the transverse member.
  3. Remove the lockbolts and the adjusting bolt from the pump bracket.
  4. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump.
  5. Remove the pump drive belt.
  6. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through 1 of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  7. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  8. Remove the pulley cover.
  9. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump along with the bracket as an assembly.

    To install:

  10. Position the pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the upper bolt to 32-44 ft. lbs. (44-60 Nm).
  11. Install the pulley cover to the bracket, and tighten the bolts to 61-87 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  12. Unplug and connect the return hose to the pump. Unplug the pressure hose, and install the hose using a new washer. Tighten the bolt to 22-32 ft. lbs. (30-44 Nm).
  13. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  14. Position the pulley on the pump shaft, and fasten the washer and nut onto the end of the shaft. Hold the pulley by inserting a small prybar through 1 of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Tighten the pulley nut to 37-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm).
  15. Install the drive belt.
  16. Install the adjusting bolt. Install the lockbolts and tighten to 24-33 ft. lbs. (31-46 Nm).
  17. Install the transverse member and tighten the mounting bolts to 69-96 ft. lbs. (94-131 Nm).
  18. Adjust the belt tension, and fill and bleed the system. Check for leaks.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
1993-95 929
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the locknut and adjusting bolt.
  3. Remove the pump drive belt.
  4. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley with tool 49 W023 585A or equivalent, or if possible, insert a small prybar through 1 of the holes in the pulley to hold it. Remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  5. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump. If equipped, disconnect the pressure switch connector.
  6. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.

    To install:

  7. Position the power steering pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
  8. Unplug and connect the hoses. If equipped, connect the pressure switch connector.
  9. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley nut to 29-43 ft. lbs. (40-58 Nm).
  10. Install the drive belt.
  11. Install the adjusting bolt and locknut. Tighten the locknut to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
  12. Adjust the belt tension. Fill and bleed the system.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995-97 Millenia
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the idler pulley locknut and remove the pulley bearing.
  3. Loosen the adjusting bolt and remove the drive belt.
  4. Keeping the pump pulley from moving, remove the pump pulley locknut. Remove the pump pulley.
  5. Remove the hose bracket mount nut.
  6. Remove the pump bracket.
  7. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  8. Disconnect the pressure pipe and return hose.
  9. Remove the power steering pump.

    To install:

  10. Place the pump to its mounts and install the mounting bolts. Torque to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  11. Connect the pressure pipe and return hose. Torque the pressure pipe mount bolt to 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-39 Nm).
  12. Connect the switch connector.
  13. Install the pump bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  14. Install the hose bracket and torque the mounting nut to 70-95.4 in. lbs. (7.9-10.7 Nm).
  15. Install the pump pulley, torque the locknut to 37-43 ft. lbs. (50-58 Nm).
  16. Install the idler pulley and bearing. Torque the nut to 24-33 ft. lbs. (32-46 Nm).
  17. Install the drive belt and tighten the adjusting bolt. Make sure that there is proper tension on the belt.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
Miata
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the bolt located at the pump pulley.
  3. Remove the nut from the adjusting bracket.
  4. Remove the adjusting bolt from the pump bracket.
  5. Remove the pump drive belt.
  6. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  7. Remove the pressure hose bracket bolt. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump. Remove the O-rings
  8. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.

    To install:

  9. Position the pump, and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 28-39 ft. lbs. (37-53 Nm).
  10. Unplug and connect the return hose to the pump. Unplug the pressure hose, and install the hose using NEW O-rings. Tighten the fitting to 24-34 ft. lbs. (32-47 Nm). Tighten the bracket bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  11. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  12. Install the drive belt, and the adjusting bolt.
  13. Install the nuts onto the adjusting bracket, and the bolt at the pulley.
  14. Adjust the belt tension, and fill and bleed the system. Check for leaks.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
1993-95 RX7
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect and plug the hoses at the pump.
  2. Remove the pump drive belt.
  3. It is necessary to remove the pump pulley before removing the pump. Hold the pulley from moving, remove the pulley nut and pulley.
  4. Support the pump, remove the mounting bolts and lift out the pump.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pulley nut to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm). Adjust the belt tension and fill and bleed the system.
