REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1990–94 Vehicles

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the radio and tape player assembly.
3. Remove the stopper, then remove the glove box assembly.
4. Detach the connector for the air-selection wire.
5. Remove the dial control knob(s) from the control head.
6. Remove the center air outlet by disengaging the tabs with a flat blade tool and carefully prying out.

7. Remove the instrument cluster bezel and radio bezel.
8. Remove the knee protector and lower the hood lock release handle.
9. Remove the left side lower duct work.
10. Disconnect the air, temperature and mode selection control cables from the heater housing.
11. Remove the mounting screws and the control head from the instrument panel.

    To install:

12. Feed the control cable through the instrument panel, attach the connectors, then install the control head assembly and secure with the screws.
13. Move the mode selection lever to the DEFROST position. Move the mode selection damper lever FULLY INWARD and connect the cable to the lever. Install the clip.
14. Move the temperature control lever to its HOTTEST position. Move the blend air damper lever FULLY DOWNWARD and connect the cable to the lever. Install the clip.
15. Move the air selection control lever to the RECIRC position. Move the air selection damper FULLY INWARD and connect the cable to the lever. Install the clip.
16. Connect the negative battery cable and check the entire climate control system for proper operation.
17. If everything is satisfactory, install the remaining interior pieces in the reverse order of removal.

1995–98 Vehicles

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Unfasten the retaining clips and remove the center trim panel.
3. Remove the center floor console, as outlined in Section 10 of this manual.
4. Remove the radio/tape and/or CD player assembly.
5. Remove the retaining stopper.
6. Remove the control assembly as follows:
   1. Remove the retaining screw(s).
   2. Press the lever pin to disconnect the air outlet changeover damper cable.

      NOTE: The boss and clamp are needed for the assembly line during factory installation, however they are not necessary for service procedures.

   3. Snap the boss and clamp with a pair of nippers, to remove the heater control assembly from the vehicle.

      To install:

7. Install the control panel, as follows:
   1. Set the temperature control knob on the panel to MAX HOT.
   2. Set the air mix damper lever at the upper part of the heater unit to the MAX HOT position, then attach the cable to the lever pin.
   3. Push the outer cable in the direction of the arrow so that there is no looseness, then secure with the clip.
   4. Set the knob for the air outlet changeover on the control to the DEF position.
   5. Set the air outlet changeover damper lever of the heater unit to the DEF position, then attach the cable to the lever pin.
   6. Push the outer cable in the direction of the arrow so there is no looseness, then secure it with the clip.
   7. Set the lever for the inside/outside air changeover on the heater control assembly to the air recirculation position.
   8. Set the inside/outside air changeover damper lever of the blower unit to the air recirculation position (with the inside/outside air changeover damper lever touched to the stopper of the blower case), then attach the cable to the lever pin.
   9. Push the outer cable in the direction of the arrow so that there is no looseness, then secure it with the clip.
   10. Properly position the control assembly and secure with the retaining screw(s).
8. Install the stopper.
9. Connect the negative battery cable and check the climate control system for proper operation before installing the remaining components.
10. Install the radio/tape and/or CD player assembly.
11. Install the center floor console, as outlined in Section 10 of this manual.
12. Install the center trim panel, making sure the clips are engaged properly.
