Front Crankshaft Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the crankcase.
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.

  5. Fan shroud
  6. Radiator and cooling fan
  7. Accessory drive belts
  8. Air conditioner tension pulley, if equipped
  9. Ignition coil, if equipped
  10. Crankshaft pulley and the timing belt front covers
  11. Reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and use it to rotate the engine clockwise until the timing marks are aligned.
  12. Remove or disconnect the following:

    To install:

  13. Place the seal guide over the crankshaft and coat it with engine oil.
  14. Slide the seal over the guide until it touches the front case assembly, then use the appropriate seal driver to install the seal. Remove the seal guide.
  15. Install or connect the following:
  16. Install the flange and the timing belt sprocket on the crankshaft.
  17. Install or connect the following:
  18. Refill the crankcase.
  19. Refill the cooling system.
  20. Start the engine and check for leaks.
3.0L and 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the crankcase.
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.

  5. Cooling fan
  6. Accessory drive belts
  7. Alternator
  8. Engine undercover, if equipped
  9. Power steering oil pump assembly
  10. Air conditioner compressor and bracket, if equipped
  11. Timing indicator bracket
  12. Accessory mount Assembly
  13. Crankshaft pulley
  14. Timing belt covers and the timing belt
  15. Crankshaft sprocket
  16. Cut out a portion in the crankshaft oil seal lip and pry out the oil seal with a flat prying tool, being careful not to damage the crankshaft.

    To install:

  17. Coat the lip of the new seal with oil and install the seal using the proper seal driver.
  18. Install or connect the following:
  19. Refill the crankcase.
  20. Refill the cooling system.
  21. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
