Axle shaft, Bearing and Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Front

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Wheel assembly
   • Brake caliber
   • Hub and knuckle assembly
   • Drive shaft
   • Shock absorber lower mounting nut/bolt
   • Inner shaft
   • Dust cover
   • Bearing, press the bearing off
   • Seal

   To install:

3. Install or connect the following:
   • Seal, press the seal on with tool MB990938 and MB990955 until it is flush
   • Dust cover, use a steel pipe to fit the cover onto the shaft
   • Bearing, Press the bearing onto the inner shaft
   • Inner shaft
   • Drive shaft. Torque the nuts to 36–43 ft. lbs. (49–59 Nm).
   • Shock absorber lower mounting nut/bolt
   • Hub and knuckle assembly
   • Brake caliber
   • Wheel assembly

Rear

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Wheel assembly
   • Brake line
   • Rear brake assembly
   • Parking brake cable and assembly
   • Axle shaft
   • Snapring
   • Retainer
   • Bearing inner race, inner and outer
   • Oil seal
   • Bearing case
   • O-ring
   • Oil seal

   To install:

3. Install or connect the following:
   • Bearing case
   • Bearing inner race, outer. Press the bearing into the bearing case.
   • Oil seal. Press the seal using tools MB990932 and MB990938.
   • Bearing inner race, inner. Press the bearing into the bearing case.
   • Axle shaft, Place into bearing case
   • Retainer, press onto shaft
   • Snapring
   • Oil seal and O-ring into axle shaft
4. Axle shaft assembly into axle.
5. Parking brake cable end
6. Parking brake cable attaching bolt
7. Rear brake assembly
8. Brake line
9. Wheel assembly
