Rocker Arms & Camshaft

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Remove the Rocker Cover, gasket, and oil seal.
  2. Use an MD998443 tool on the rocker arm to hold the lash adjuster.

  3. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolt, but do not remove the bolts from the cap.
  4. As an assembly, remove the rocker arm, shaft, and bearing cap.

    NOTE: If you are going to reuse the lash adjuster, clean and check it before installing it.

  5. Remove the rocker shaft spring.
  6. Remove the rocker arms.
  7. Remove the rocker arm shafts and lash adjusters.
  8. Remove the thrust case and the O-ring.
  9. Remove the camshafts.

To Install:

  1. Put engine oil on the camshaft journals and cams before installing the camshafts. Place the right and left camshafts back into their original positions on the correct sides.

    NOTE: For correct identification, the right bank camshaft has a 4mm wide slit at the rear end of the camshaft.

  2. Make sure the camshaft dowel pins are located in approximately the positions illustrated.

  3. Install the O-ring and thrust case.

    NOTE: If you are going to reuse the lash adjuster, clean and check it before installing it.

  4. Fit the lash adjuster onto the rocker arm and do not let fuel spill out. Use special tool MD998443 to keep the lash adjuster from falling to the floor.

    NOTE: Before installing the exhaust rocker arms and rocker arm shaft, mount the rocker shaft spring.

  5. The rocker arm shaft end with the larger chamfer is at the right on the left bank and at the left on the right bank.

  6. The rocker arm shaft side with the oil holes is on the lower Cylinder Head side.
  7. Install the rocker arms.
  8. Install the rocker shaft spring by inserting it at a slant in relation to the spark plug guide and install it normally to the guide.

  9. Install the camshaft oil seal.
  10. Install the rocker cover gasket and the Rocker Cover.
