2.0L Turbo Engine

To Remove:

Camshaft removal/installation (Typical 2.0L)

  1. Remove the under cover and side cover.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the air duct.
  4. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6. Remove the center rocker arm cover.
  7. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and crankshaft position sensor connectors.
  8. Disconnect the engine control harness connector.
  9. Disconnect the PCV hose and breather hose from the rocker arm cover.
  10. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  11. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
  12. Remove the ground terminal.
  13. Remove the vacuum hose and bracket.
  14. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket.
  15. Remove the cover, camshaft position sensing cylinder and camshaft position sensor support.
  16. Remove the camshaft sprockets. Hold the flats on the camshaft to prevent the camshaft from turning.
  17. Remove the camshaft oil seals.
  18. Remove the front and rear camshaft bearing caps.
  19. Remove bearing caps 2, 5, 3 and 4 in order given.
  20. Remove the camshafts and rocker arms as needed. Keep the rocker arms in order so they can be installed in their original location.

To Install:

NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps are marked. Make sure to install the caps in the original locations.

NOTE: The exhaust camshaft has a slot at the rear end.

  1. Install the rocker arms if removed.
  2. Install the camshafts and bearing caps. Position the dowel pins on the front of the camshafts at the 12 o’clock position. Tighten the bearing caps gradually to a final torque of 14 ft-lbs (20 Nm).
  3. Apply silicone sealant to the front intake and front/rear exhaust bearing caps where the bearing caps meet the cylinder heads and rocker arm cover.
  4. Install the camshaft seal with a suitable seal driver.
  5. Install the camshaft sprockets.
  6. Install the camshaft position sensing cylinder support. Make sure to clean the mounting surface and apply new silicone sealant to the mounting flange.
  7. CAUTION
Never start the engine or allow oil or coolant to contact the sealant for a least an hour.

  8. Set the dowel pin of the exhaust camshaft to the 12 o’clock position (number 1 cylinder at compression TDC) as shown.
  9. NOTE: Use the force of the exhaust valve spring to rotate counterclockwise.

  10. Install the small vane of the sensing cylinder at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the position of the dowel pin on the exhaust camshaft. Tighten the camshaft position sensing cylinder mounting bolts to 16 ft-lbs (22 Nm).
  11. Camshaft sensing cylinder installation (2.0L Turbo)

  12. Install the sensing cylinder gasket and cover.
  13. Install the rocker arm cover.
  14. Install the vacuum hose and bracket.
  15. Install the ground terminal.
  16. Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.
  17. Connect the upper radiator hose.
  18. Connect the PCV hose and breather hose to the rocker arm cover.
  19. Connect the engine control harness connector.
