Insert a suitable breaker bar into the drive belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise until an "L" shaped tool such as a hex wrench can be inserted through the holes in the tensioner as shown.
Mark the direction of the drive belt on the belt and then remove the drive belt.
To Install:
Install the drive belt in the original direction.
Rotate the tensioner slightly and remove the holding tool.
Turn the adjusting bolt to loosen the tension on the belt.
Remove the belt.
To Install:
Install the belt on the pulleys.
Tighten the adjusting bolt to tension the belt.
Apply approximately 22 pounds (100 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the A/C compressor and the crankshaft pulley and check that the amount of deflection is within the standard value of: 0.33 - 0.42 in. (8.4 - 10.7 mm)
When the specified amount of deflection is achieved, tighten the fixing nut to 36 ft-lbs (49 Nm).
Power steering pump belt removal/installation (3.8L)
Loosen the lock nut.
Turn the adjusting bolt to loosen the tension on the belt.
Remove the belt.
To Install:
Install the belt on the pulleys.
Tighten the adjusting bolt to tension the belt.
Apply approximately 22 pounds (100 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulleys and check that the amount of deflection is within the standard value of: 0.48 - 0.64 in. (12.3 - 16.2 mm)
When the specified amount of deflection is achieved, tighten the locking nut to 36 ft-lbs (49 Nm).
