CAUTION
If removal of the steering wheel on a vehicle equipped with an air bag is planned,
refer to the Supplemental Restraint System procedures in this section for instructions
and warnings.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the steering wheel. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering
wheel.
WARNING
Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it; doing so may damage the
collapsible mechanism.
- On some late model Monteros, it may be necessary to remove the instrument
under cover to gain access to the lower column cover.
- Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. On some models it may
be necessary to remove the lower dash panel or knee protector for access.
- Follow the combination switch wiring harness down the column to the connector.
Detach the connector and release any wire clips holding the harness to the
switch.
- Remove the retaining screws holding the switch to the column. Work the switch
off the column.
NOTE: Some models have the turn signal and hazard switches
mounted on a separate base plate. Removing the mounting screws will allow
separate removal or replacement.
- Install the switch, tighten the mounting screws and route the wire harness
to the connector. Make sure the wire does not interfere with the moving parts
of the tilt column mechanism.
WARNING
The switch must be centered in the column. If it is installed on an angle,
the self-cancelling aspect of the turn signals will be affected.
- Connect the harness and install any wire clips or retainers.
- Install the upper and lower column covers.
- Install the instrument under cover, if removed earlier.
- Install the steering wheel.
- Connect the battery cable back to the battery.
