- Disconnect the wiring at the back of the switch.
- Loosen the locknut holding the switch to the bracket. Remove the locknut
and remove the switch.
- Install the new switch and install the locknut, tightening it just snug.
- Reposition the brake light switch so that the distance between the outer
case of the switch and the pedal is 0.020–0.040 in. (0.5–1.0mm).
Note that the switch tab or prong must press against the pedal to keep the
brake lights off. As the pedal moves away from the switch, the tab is released
and closes the switch which turns on the lights.
- Hold the switch in the correct position and tighten the locknut.
- Connect the wiring to the switch.
- Check the operation of the switch. Turn the ignition key to ON but
do not start the engine. Have an assistant observe the brake lights at the
rear while you push lightly on the brake pedal. The lights should come on
just as the brake pedal passes the point of free-play.
- Adjust the switch as necessary to get the correct response from the lights.
The small amount of free-play in the pedal should not trigger the brake lights;
if the switch is set incorrectly, the brake lights will flicker due to pedal
vibration on road bumps.
