Air Cleaner

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The air cleaner element used on all Subaru models covered in this book is of the oil-impregnated, disposable type, and no attempt should be made to clean, wash, or re-oil it.

Replace the element at the following intervals, months or miles whichever comes first:

To remove the air cleaner element;

  1. Remove the wing nut(s) from the top of the air cleaner housing and lift off the top section.

  2. Set it aside carefully, as on some models the emission control system hoses are fastened to it.
  3. Lift out the old element and clean the inside of the air cleaner housing with a paper towel or clean rag.

    To install:

  4. Install a new air cleaner element.
  5. Install the top on the air cleaner and secure it with the wing nut(s).

    WARNING
    If there is an arrow on the top of the air cleaner, it should be positioned toward the front of the vehicle.
