REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Air Pump
  1. Disconnect the air hoses from the pump.
  2. Loosen the bolt on the adjusting link and remove the drive belt.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the pump.

    CAUTION
    Do not pry on the pump housing. It may become distorted.

    To install:

  4. Install the pump, fasten the mounting bolts and fasten the bolt on the adjusting link. Connect the hoses.
  5. Adjust the drive belt tension. Belt deflection should be 3.5 in. (9mm) with 22 lbs. (29 Nm) pressure.

Anti–Backfire Valve
  1. Detach the air hoses from the valve.
  2. Remove the valve securing bolt.
  3. Remove the valve.
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Check Valves
  1. Detach the intake hoses from the valves.
  2. Use an open end wrench to remove the valve from its mounting. Be sure to save the aluminum gasket.
Relief Valve
  1. Remove the air pump from the car.
  2. Support the pump so that it cannot rotate.

    CAUTION
    Never clamp the pump in a vise. The aluminum case will be distorted.

  3. Remove the relief valve from the top of the pump.

    To install:

  4. Position the new relief valve over the opening in the pump.

    NOTE: The air outlet should be pointing toward the left.

  5. Gently tap the relief valve home, using a block of wood and a hammer.
  6. Install the pump on the engine, as outlined above.
Air Injection Manifold
  1. Remove the check valve, as outlined above.
  2. Detach the air supply hose from the check valve.
  3. Remove the manifold.
Air By–pass Valve (1971–72 EA62 Only)
  1. Disconnect the hoses from the air by-pass valve.
  2. Detach the cable from the valve butterfly operating lever.
  3. Remove the valve.
