Instrument Cluster

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1970 ff–1and 1300G

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.

2. Disconnect the speedometer cable, by reaching up behind the dash panel and loosening its securing nut.
3. Carefully pull the instrument cluster wiring connector straight back, away from the cluster.
4. Loosen the cluster retaining springs and pull the cluster forward, out of the dash panel.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1972–73 GL and DL

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
2. Pull the knobs off the radio shafts and remove the shaft securing nuts.
3. Remove the ash tray and the instrument panel securing nut which is located behind it.
4. Remove the set screw which secures the light switch (GL Coupe only) and the wiper switch (all models) knobs. Pull the knob(s) off and remove the retaining nut(s) from the switch(es).
5. Working from underneath the dash, remove the speedometer cable securing spring. Push the hook on the speedometer up, while pulling the cable back in order to disengage it.
6. Disconnect the junction block at the back of the instrument cluster.
7. Disengage the cigar lighter wiring connectors.
8. Remove the complete instrument panel surround from the car and separate the cluster from it, by removing the cluster securing screws.
9. On GL models only, remove the tachometer in the following manner:
   1. Remove the tachometer surround panel by loosening its two attaching screws.
   2. Remove the tachometer securing screws.
   3. Disconnect the tachometer leads.
   4. Remove the tachometer from the dash.

      To install:

10. Install the tachometer leads and secure the tachometer to the surround panel (GL models only).
11. Secure the instrument cluster to the instrument panel and install the panel into the dashboard.
12. Connect the cigar lighter wiring and the junction block to the back of the instrument cluster.
13. Install the speedometer cable and all switches and knobs that were removed.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.

1974–76 Models

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
2. Detach the driver's side fresh air vent duct by loosening its securing clamp.
3. On GL Coupe models, perform the following, working from underneath the dash:
   1. Disconnect the rear window defogger switch leads.
   2. Disconnect the tachometer lead.
   3. Loosen the trip odometer reset knob setscrew and pull the knob off.
4. On all models, reach up underneath the dash and disconnect the speedometer cable and the junction block.
5. Remove the screws which secure the instrument cluster bezel.
6. On GL Coupes, pull the cluster/bezel assembly out just far enough to disconnect the following electrical leads:
   1. Clock
   2. Brake warning lamp
   3. Seat belt warning lamp
7. Pull the cluster/bezel assembly out, away from the dash and lift it out of the car. Separate the cluster from the bezel by removing its attaching screws.

   To install:

8. Connect the instrument cluster/bezel assembly and install all electrical leads that were removed.
9. Install the cluster/bezel assembly into the dash.
10. Connect the speedometer cable and junction block to the instrument cluster.
11. Connect the rear window defogger switch leads, the tachometer lead and the trip odometer reset knob.
12. Attach the drivers side fresh air vent duct.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.

1977–79 Models

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
2. Remove the instrument cluster bezel, with rear window defogger switch, by removing the mounting screws.
3. Remove the screws mounting the instrument cluster.
4. Disconnect the speedometer cable and wiring harness from the back of the instrument cluster.
5. Remove the instrument cluster.
6. Reverse the above procedure to install the cluster.

1980–84 Models

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.

2. Remove the two bolts under the dash which fasten the steering column to the dash.
3. Lower the steering column until the wheel rests on the seat.
4. Remove the screws securing the visor.

5. Disengage the electrical connectors and remove the visor.
6. On GL models, to remove the visor perform the following:
   1. Remove the center ventilator control lever by pulling it.
   2. Remove the three screws accessible through the ventilator grill to the right of the cluster and the one screw accessible through the grill on the left.
   3. Remove the visor.

7. Remove the four screws holding the instrument cluster in place.
8. Pull the meter out a little and disengage the speedometer cable and electrical connectors behind the cluster.
9. Remove the cluster.
10. Installation is the reverse of the removal.
