REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut.
  3. Remove the tie rod end from the knuckle arm of the housing.
  4. Remove the hand brake cable hanger from the tie rod.
  5. Pull out the cotter pins and remove the rubber coupling connecting bolts.
  6. Disconnect the pinion with the gearbox from the steering shaft.
  7. Straighten the lockplate and remove the bolts which hold the gearbox bracket to the crossmember.
  8. On DL and GL models, loosen the front engine mounting bolts and lift up the engine by about 0.19 in. (5mm) to avoid touching the gearbox with the engine. Remove the gearbox from the vehicle.

    To install:

  9. Reverse Steps 1 through 6 to install the steering gear.
  10. Torque the rack and pinion assembly securing bolts to 33–40 ft. lbs. (44–54 Nm) and torque the tie rod end castellated nuts to 18–22 ft. lbs. (24–29 Nm).
  11. Adjust the rear wheel toe-in after completing installation.
