Upper Ball Joint

INSPECTION

Inspect the upper ball joint with the vehicle raised and supported with jackstands, as follows:

  1. Separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  2. Move the stud with your finger.
  3. If there is excessive play present, replace the lower ball joint.
  4. Check the ball joint boots for tears or other damage. Replace the boots, if they are damaged.
  5. Repack with a long lasting chassis grease, if the boots are being replaced.
  6. Apply 0.28–0.35 oz. (8–10g) of grease to the stud neck, 0.11 oz. (3g) to the boot interior, and a small amount of grease to the inner lip of the boot.
