Apply the parking brake. Remove the wheel cover and loosen the lug nuts.
Either straighten out the locktabs with pliers or straighten the staked
portion of the axle shaft nut with a chisel, depending upon model year. Loosen,
but do not remove the axle shaft nut.
Raise the front of the car and support it with jackstands, making sure that
it is securely supported.
Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
Unfasten the axle shaft nut, and release the parking brake.
Remove the brake drum with a suitable puller.
CAUTION
Do not depress the brake pedal while the drum is removed.
Reverse Steps 1 through 6 to install the brake drums.
Install the axle shaft nut and tighten to the following specifications:
1972–73: 145–181 ft. lbs.(196–245 Nm)
1974–75: 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm)
Secure the nut with either the nut lock (1972–73) or by staking it
(1974–75).
