Brake Drums

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

ff–1 and 1300G
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Loosen the 3 bolts on the Double Offset Joint (DOJ) side, and remove the DOJ from the drum.
  4. Remove the drum cover attached to the brake assembly.
  5. Remove the interior portion of the handbrake cable assembly into the engine compartment.
  6. Straighten the brake drum locking cotter pin and remove it.
  7. Unscrew the nut and remove the drum in parallel with the splined shaft.

    WARNING
    Do not depress the brake pedal while the drum is removed.

  8. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  9. Tighten the brake retaining nut to 116–134 ft. lbs. (157–181 Nm) and lock with the cotter pin.
1972–75 DL Sedans and Wagons
  1. Apply the parking brake. Remove the wheel cover and loosen the lug nuts.
  2. Either straighten out the locktabs with pliers or straighten the staked portion of the axle shaft nut with a chisel, depending upon model year. Loosen, but do not remove the axle shaft nut.
  3. Raise the front of the car and support it with jackstands, making sure that it is securely supported.
  4. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  5. Unfasten the axle shaft nut, and release the parking brake.
  6. Remove the brake drum with a suitable puller.

    CAUTION
    Do not depress the brake pedal while the drum is removed.

  7. Reverse Steps 1 through 6 to install the brake drums.
  8. Install the axle shaft nut and tighten to the following specifications:
  9. Secure the nut with either the nut lock (1972–73) or by staking it (1974–75).
