PARKING BRAKE

Cable

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

ff–1 and 1300G Models
  1. Loosen the cable turnbuckle locknut.
  2. Separate the halves of the cable.
  3. Withdraw the clip, pin, pulley, and the cable.
  4. Loosen the nut and remove the cable from its bracket.
  5. Remove the nut, washer, bushing, and turnbuckle from the cable.
  6. Withdraw the cable boot from the engine compartment side of the floorboard.
  7. Remove the brake cable.

    To install:

  8. Install the cable boot to the engine compartment side of the floorboard.
  9. install the turnbuckle, bushing, washer and the nut on the cable.
  10. Install the cable in the bracket and fasten the nut.
  11. Install the cable, pulley, pin, and the clip.
  12. Engage the halves of the cable.
  13. Fasten the turnbuckle locknut.
1970–79 Models (Except ff–1 and 1300G)
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire.
  3. Remove the brake drum.

  4. Remove the handbrake cover and console.
  5. Loosen the cable adjusting nut.
  6. Remove the cable end from the equalizer.
  7. Remove the cable end tightening clip.
  8. Remove the service hole cover on the tunnel.
  9. Remove the cable clamp from the crossmember.
  10. Remove the cable installing bracket from the control arm.
  11. Remove the handbrake cable hanger from the tie rod end.
  12. Disconnect the handbrake cable end from the handbrake lever by removing the secondary shoe.
  13. Remove the cable end nut, washer, and spring washer from the inside of the backing plate and pull the handbrake cable out from the backing plate.
  14. Pull the handbrake cable assembly from the engine compartment and remove it from the body together with the grommet.

    To install:

  15. Install the handbrake cable through the engine compartment and into the body together with the grommet.
  16. Install the brake cable end into the lever and spindle assembly and secure it with the hose clamp.
  17. Install the handbrake cable into the backing plate and install the spring washer, washer and cable end nut.
  18. Install the secondary brake shoe and connect the handbrake cable end.
  19. Install the handbrake cable hanger to tie rod end.
  20. Connect the cable installing bracket to the control arm.
  21. Install the cable clamp to the crossmember and the service hole cover to the tunnel.
  22. Install the cable end tightening clip.
  23. Install the cable end from the equalizer.
  24. Tighten the cable adjusting nut.
  25. Install the handbrake cover and console.
  26. Install the brake drum.
  27. Install the wheel and tire and lower the vehicle.
1980–84 Models
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Remove the parking brake cover.
  4. Unfasten the locknut and then loosen the parking brake adjuster until tension is almost gone.
  5. Disconnect the inner cable ends from the equalizer.
  6. Remove the clips that fasten the cable grommets in place where the cable passes through the body.
  7. Pull the parking brake cable clamp out of the caliper and disconnect the end of the cable.
  8. On 1980 vehicles disconnect the front exhaust pipe and remove it.
  9. On 1980–81 vehicles, remove the front-most exhaust system cover.
  10. Loosen the attaching bolt and remove the bracket holding the cable to the transverse link.
  11. Unfasten the bolt and remove the bracket attaching the cable to the crossmember bracket.
  12. Detach the cable from the guide to the rear crossmember.
  13. Pull the cable out of the passenger compartment.
  14. To install, reverse this procedure, making sure the cable passes through the guide inside the driveshaft tunnel. Adjust the brake as described in this section.
