REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

NOTE: It is a good idea to remove the shoes one side at a time. This way you can refer to the brake on the other side for the correct order of shoe installation.

ff–1 and 1300G

1. Remove the brake drums.
2. Loosen and remove the brake line from the rear of the backing plate.
3. Unscrew the 4 brake backing plate bolts and remove the brake assembly from the vehicle.

4. Before disassembling, make sure that the automatic adjuster assembly movement is correct by pulling the cable.
5. Lift the automatic adjuster assembly cable by pulling it out from the shoe side and removing it from the shoe hole.
6. Remove the automatic adjuster assembly from the shoe.
7. Remove the shoe return spring and cable from the anchor pin by using a brake tool.
8. Remove the shoe set spring with a brake tool to release the shoe.
9. Remove the handbrake cable from the shoe.
10. Remove the handbrake shoe strut and shoes.
11. Clean the adjuster and grease its threads. Remove excess grease from its outside.

    To install:

12. Install the primary shoe on the backing plate and secure it with its retaining spring.
13. Attach the parking brake lever and cable assembly to the secondary shoe.
14. Install the secondary shoe and secure it with its retaining spring.
15. Coat the backing plate surfaces with a small amount of brake grease where it contacts the brake shoes.

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to get any grease on the lining surfaces.

16. Position the parking brake strut between the shoes.
17. Using a brake tool, fit the automatic adjuster cable over the anchor pin.
18. Install the primary shoe return spring, adjuster cable, and the cable guide on the secondary shoe.
19. After making sure that the cable guide is installed in its positioning hole, attach the secondary shoe return spring.
20. Adjust the length of the automatic adjuster, so that it will position the shoes 2 in. (58mm) apart.
21. Move the automatic adjuster lever toward the cable and install the adjuster spring.
22. Be sure that all of the parts are correctly assembled. Check the brake on the other side, if in doubt.
23. Apply brake grease between the cable and the guide, using care not to get any on the linings.
24. Install the automatic adjuster between the shoes and into its hole. Make sure that the lever engages with the starwheel properly.
25. Measure the outside diameter of the shoes against the inside diameter of the drum. The shoes should have 0.01–0.02 in. (0.3–0.6mm) clearance from the drum.
26. Move the adjuster to obtain proper clearance as necessary.
27. Install the baffle over the end of the driveshaft, if it was removed.
28. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder.
29. Insert the parking brake cable.
30. Install the brake and backing plate assembly. Tighten the backing plate attaching bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
31. See the appropriate section above for the brake drum installing procedure.
32. Bleed the brake system after performing the shoe removal and installation procedure to the other side.

1972–75 DL Sedans and Wagons

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
2. Remove the wheel, tire and the brake drum.

3. Remove the automatic adjuster spring with a screwdriver.
4. Remove the automatic adjuster lever.
5. Remove the lower shoe return spring.
6. Remove the handbrake cable end from the handbrake lever. Loosen the clamp nut with a box wrench. Separate the washer and pull the handbrake cable out.
7. Remove the upper shoe return springs from the anchor pin with a brake tool.
8. Remove the automatic adjuster.
9. Remove the shoe set springs with the brake tool and free the brake shoes.

   To install:

10. Install the shoes and the shoe set springs.
11. Install the automatic adjuster and the upper shoe return spring.
12. Install the handbrake cable and the lower shoe return spring.
13. Install the automatic adjuster spring and the brake drum.
    1. The shoe-to-drum clearance should be 0.003–0.009 (0.10–0.25mm). Check this by measuring the outside diameter of the installed shoes and comparing against the inside diameter of the drum. Use the adjuster to obtain the correct clearance.
14. Install the wheel and lower, tighten the lug nuts and lower the vehicle.
15. Perform the operation to the front brake on the other side, and then bleed the brake system.
