REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Remove the wheels.
  2. Remove the brake drums.

  3. Remove both return springs carefully with a pair of brake pliers.
  4. Remove both retaining clips by first turning them 90°with a pair of pliers to line up the slot in the lip with the flat end of the pin and then pulling them off the pins.
  5. Disconnect shoes on the adjuster side first and then on the wheel cylinder side, and pull them off the backing plate.

    To install:

  6. Apply brake grease to the backing plate where the brake shoes contact it.
  7. Install shoes to the wheel cylinder and then to the adjuster.
  8. Install the two retaining clips.

    WARNING
    Be careful to keep the grease off the linings.

  9. Assemble the return springs. The upper spring is thinner.
  10. Use the wedge to adjust the brake shoe diameter to 7 in. (180mm). Measure the diameter in at least 3 places around the shoes.
  11. Install the drum and adjust the brakes as outlined below.
  12. Perform the operation for the brake shoes on the other side.
