Brake Shoes

INSPECTION

Remove the drum and inspect the lining thickness of both brake shoes. The rear brake shoes should be replaced if the lining is less than 0.039 in. (1mm) thick above the rivet (so that the lining is thicker than the metal shoe backing in most cases), in order to prevent the rivet from scoring the drum. On bonded shoes, the thickness of the bonded lining should be 0.039 in. (1mm) above the metal shoe backing plate. As with all brake service, keep in mind that applicable local regulations, if more stringent, take precedence over these specifications.

Inspect the brake shoes for excessive or uneven wear, fluid contamination, bent and/or broken parts and cracks. If any of these conditions exist, replace the brake shoes.

NOTE: Brake shoes should always be replaced in sets.
