NOTE: Only service one brake assembly at a time. This will allow for visual comparison in the event of difficulty.

  1. Raise the vehicle and safely support on jackstands. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Remove the brake drum.
  3. Remove both return springs carefully with a pair of brake pliers or equivalent.
  4. Remove both retaining clips by first turning them 90 degrees with a pair of pliers to line up the slot in the lip with the flat end of the pin, then pull them off the pins.
  5. Disconnect the brake shoes from the adjuster side first, then the wheel cylinder side, and pull them off the backing plate.
  6. If equipped with rear drum parking brakes, unfasten the parking brake cable from the parking lever on the rearward brake shoe.
  7. Inspect all the brake shoe installation hardware and replace any piece(s) which are worn or damaged.

    To install:

  8. Apply brake grease to the backing plate where the brake shoes contact it.
  9. Install the brake shoes to the wheel cylinder, then to the adjuster. Secure in place with the two pins and retaining clips.

    WARNING
Be careful to keep the grease off the linings. If grease gets on the linings, it could cause reduced braking performance.

  10. Assemble the return springs. The upper spring is thinner.
  11. Adjust the brake shoe diameter to 7 in. (180mm). Measure the diameter in at least 3 places around the shoes.
  12. Install the drum and adjust the brake shoes.
  13. Install the wheel and tire assembly, then lower the vehicle.
