REAR DRUM BRAKES

Coupe, Sedan, Wagon, Brat, Loyale and XT

Perform rear brake adjustment every 6 months/6,000 miles (9662 km), whichever occurs first. Adjust the rear brakes by turning the wedge bolt, which is located on the bottom of the backing plate.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2. Remove the rubber cap from the adjusting screw.
  3. Tighten the adjuster until the wheel ceases to rotate.
  4. Back off the adjuster 180°.
  5. Verify that the wheel turns easily by hand.
  6. Install the rubber cap on the adjuster screw.
  7. Lower the vehicle.

The Justy rear drum brakes use a conventional style star wheel adjuster mechanism. To adjust the brakes, remove the rubber adjuster hole cover and, using a slightly curved small prybar inserted through the hole, turn the star wheel until the brake shoes begin to drag on the brake drum. The wheel should be hard to turn, then back off the adjuster slightly, until the wheel frees up.
