BRAKE PEDAL

The brake pedal travel is the distance the pedal moves toward the floor from the fully released position.

  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Measure brake pedal height between the floor of the vehicle and the top of the pedal after the engine is revved several times. Ensure that the pedal is fully returned by the pedal return spring. Pedal height should be:
  2. Turn OFF the engine. Depress the brake pedal several times. Measure the pedal free-play. If the measured free-play is not within the specification of
  3. Coupe, Sedan, Wagon, Loyale and Brat — 0.020–0.098 in. (0.5–2.5mm)
  4. XT — 0.020–0.098 in. (0.5–2.5mm)
  5. Legacy, Impreza, SVX — 0.04–0.12 in. (1–3mm)

  6. Adjust the brake pedal as follows:
    1. Disconnect the stop light switch connector.
    2. Loosen the stop light switch locknut and back the switch away from brake pedal.
    3. Loosen the locknut on the pushrod and adjust the brake pedal to the specified height.
    4. Tighten the pushrod locknut to 4–7 ft. lbs. (5–9 Nm).
    5. Adjust the stop light switch to adjust the pedal free-play and attach the connector.

      CAUTION
      Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. The procedure can be found in Section 6 of this manual under the heading "Supplemental Restraint System''.

      If the operation of the brake light switch is not smooth and/or the stroke is not within specified value, replace the switch with a new one.
