Service Precautions

WARNING
Wear safety glasses when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

Fastener Notice:

• Use the correct fastener in the correct location.
• Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application.
• Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.
• Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener.
• Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System Service Precautions:

WARNING
Work on these (SIR) systems should be performed by qualified service technicians.

WARNING
Refer to manufacturers SIR Service Precautions and procedures before disabling / enabling the SIR system.

WARNING
When you are performing service on or near the sir components or the sir wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to the manufacture's sir disable/enable procedure. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

WARNING
When carrying a live inflator module (air bag), make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry inflator module (air bag) by the wires or connector on the underside of the module. In case of an accidental deployment, the bag will deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live inflator module (air bag) on a bench or other surface, always face bag and trim cover up, away from the surface.

WARNING
Never rest a steering column assembly on the steering wheel with the inflator module (air bag) face down and column vertical. This is necessary so that a free space is provided to allow the inflator module (air bag) to expand in the unlikely event of accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury could result.

WARNING
Safety precautions must be followed when handling a deployed inflator module (air bag). After deployment, the inflator module (air bag) surface may contain a small amount of sodium hydroxide, a by-product of the deployment reaction, that is irritating to the skin and eyes.

• Most of the powder on the inflator module (air bag) is harmless. As a precaution, wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed inflator module (air bag), and wash your hands with mild soap and water afterwards.
• When carrying a live inflator module (air bag), make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. WARNING
In the event deployment has occurred, inspect coil assembly wire and driver inflator module for any signs of scorching, melting or other damage due to excessive heat. If the coil or inflator module has been damaged, replace it.

Battery Service Precautions:

WARNING
Batteries produce explosive gases. Batteries contain corrosive acid. Batteries supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of personal injury while working near a battery, observe the following guidelines:

• Always shield your eyes.
• Avoid leaning over the battery whenever possible.
• Do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks.
• Do not allow battery acid to contact the eyes or the skin.
• Flush any contacted areas with water immediately and thoroughly.
• Get medical help.
• Do not connect a jumper cable directly to the negative terminal of a discharged battery to prevent sparking and possible explosion of battery gases.

CAUTION
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF unless instructed otherwise in these procedures.

• If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable.
• Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Fuse And Circuit Breaker Precautions:

When replacing a blown fuse or defective circuit breaker, it is important to use only a fuse or circuit breaker having the correct amperage rating.

The use of a fuse or circuit breaker with a rating other than indicated may result in a dangerous electrical system overload. If a properly rated fuse or circuit breaker continues to blow or trip, it indicates a problem in the circuit that must be corrected.
