BRAKES

Service Precautions

WARNING
Wear safety glasses when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

Fastener Notice:

Brake System Precautions:

WARNING
Take precautions to avoid contact with brake fluid - it is an irritant.

WARNING
Brake fluid may be irritating to the skin or eyes. In case of contact, take the following actions:

CAUTION
Brake fluid may have detrimental effects on paint and electrical components.

WARNING
Precautions should be taken to avoid exposure to brake dust.

  1. Inspect the disc brake pads at regular intervals, or whenever the tire and wheel assemblies are removed from the vehicle
  2. If replacement is necessary, always replace disc brake pads in axle sets
  3. Inspect both edges of the disc brake pad friction surfaces.
  4. The highest rate of wear normally occurs at the trailing edge of the disc brake pads
  5. Inspect the thickness of the disc brake pads in order to ensure that they have not worn excessively.
  6. The disc brake pad wear should be approximately even per axle set
  7. Both front and rear disc brake pads have integral, audible wear sensors.
  8. When the disc brake pad wear reaches the minimum allowable thickness, the wear sensor contacts the disc brake rotor. T
  9. The wear indicator will then produce an audible, high-pitched warning noise during wheel rotation
  10. Replace the disc brake pads when the friction surface is worn to within 1 mm (0.039 inch) of the mounting plates
  11. Remove the brake calipers and inspect the friction surfaces of the inner and outer disc brake pads to ensure that they are level.
  12. Place the disc brake pad friction surfaces together and measure the gap between the surfaces.
  13. If more than 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) gap exists midway between the length of the disc brake pads, replace the disc brake pads.
  14. Verify that any disc brake pad shims that may be required are in place and not damaged or excessively corroded.
  15. Replace any missing or damaged shims in order to preserve proper disc brake performance
  16. Replace the disc brake pads if any have separated from the mounting plates
  17. Inspect the disc brake pads friction surfaces for cracks, fractures, or damage which may cause noise or otherwise impair disc brake performance
  18. Inspect the noise insulators on the brake pad mounting plate
  19. Replace the brake pads if the noise insulators have separated from the brake pad mounting plate

WARNING
Road test a vehicle under safe conditions and while obeying all traffic laws.

Lifting & Jacking Precautions:

WARNING
Make sure the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned prior to lifting.

WARNING
Ensure that the hoist does not contact fuel or brake lines.

WARNING
Ensure that vehicle is securely supported and squarely positioned before lifting on a hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is not on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed. Ensure that the hoist does not contact fuel or brake lines.

WARNING
To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.

WARNING
The centerline of gravity on front-wheel drive vehicles is further forward than on rear-wheel drive vehicles. Therefore, whenever removing major components from the rear of a front-wheel drive vehicle, while supported on a hoist, it is mandatory to support the vehicle in a manner to prevent the possibility of a vehicle tipping forward.

WARNING
To help avoid personal injury, always use jack stands when working on or under any vehicle that is supported only by a jack.

CAUTION
When jacking or lifting a vehicle at the frame side rails or other prescribed lift points, be certain that lift pads do not contact the catalytic converter, brake pipes or cables, or fuel lines. Such contact may result in damage or unsatisfactory vehicle performance.
