Automatic Transmission Assembly

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

1. Open front hood fully, and support with stay
2. Disconnect or remove the following
   • Battery ground cable
   • Air intake duct
   • Air cleaner case or air intake chamber
   • Air cleaner case stay
   • Transmission harness connector
   • Transmission ground terminal
   • Starter
   • Dog bone
   • Torque converter clutch from drive plate
   • Service hole plug
   • Torque converter clutch to drive plate bolts
   • Remaining torque converter clutch to drive plate bolts using ST while rotating the engine (ST 499977100 CRANK PULLEY WRENCH)

     CAUTION
     Be careful not to drop bolts into torque converter clutch housing.

     Install ST to torque converter clutch case (ST498277200 STOPPER SET).

   • ATF level gauge

     CAUTION
     Plug opening to prevent entry of foreign particles into transmission fluid.

     Also available is Part No. 41 099AA010. ST 41099AA020 ENGINE SUPPORT ASSY

   • Under cover
   • Front, center, rear exhaust pipe and muffler

   • Heat shield cover
   • ATF drain plug to remove ATF

   • ATF cooler hoses from pipes of transmission side, and remove ATF level gauge guide
   • Propeller shaft
   • Shift select cable
   • Stabilizer link from transverse link
   • Ball joint of transverse link to housing bolt
   • Spring pins and separate front drive shafts from each side of the transmission
3. Place transmission jack under transmission
4. Remove the following
   • Bell housing upper bolts and lower nuts

     CAUTION
     Make sure that the support plates of transmission jack don't touch the oil pan.

   • Transmission rear crossmember from vehicle
   • Transmission

   CAUTION
   Move transmission and torque converter as a unit away from engine.

5. Separate transmission assembly and rear cushion rubber

To Install:

1. Gradually raise transmission with transmission jack
2. Install or connect the following
   • Transmission onto engine by engaging them at splines

   • Transmission rear crossmember
   • Torque Specification: T1: 35 Nm (26 Ft. Lbs.) T2: 75 Nm (55 Ft. Lbs.)

   • Bell housing nuts and bolts and take off transmission jack
   • Torque Specification: 50 Nm (36.9 Ft. Lbs.)
   • Torque converter clutch to drive plate bolts
   • Torque Specification: 25 Nm (18.1 Ft. Lbs.)

     CAUTION
     Be careful not to drop the ST into the torque converter clutch case when removing (ST 498277200 STOPPER SET). Be careful not to drop bolts into torque converter clutch housing.

   • Starter
   • Clog plug onto service hole
   • Dog bone
   • Torque Specification: T1: 50 Nm (37 Ft. Lbs.) T2: 58 Nm (43 Ft. Lbs.)
   • Front drive shafts into transmission
   • New drive spring pin into chamfered hole of drive shaft
   • Ball joint into housing
   • Stabilizer link to transverse link, and temporarily tighten bolts
   • Torque Specification: T1: 30 Nm (22.4 Ft. Lbs.) T2: 50 Nm (37 Ft. Lbs.)

     CAUTION
     Discard loosened self-locking nut and replace with a new one.

   • Shift select cable onto select lever

   • ATF level gauge guide, and connect ATF cooler hoses to pipe
   • Propeller shaft

   • Heat shield cover
   • Rear exhaust pipe and muffler assembly
   • Front and center exhaust pipe
   • Under cover
   • ATF level gauge
   • Transmission harness connectors
   • Transmission ground terminal
   • Cruise control cable (with cruise control vehicles)
   • Air cleaner case stay
   • Torque Specification: 16 Nm (11.6 Ft. Lbs.)
   • Air cleaner case or air intake chamber
   • Battery ground cable
3. Fill ATF up to the middle of the "cold" side on level gauge by using the gauge hole
4. Check select lever operation
5. Check the ATF level
6. Check the vehicle on the road tester
