Timing Chain and Chain Tensioner Removal and Installation
Precautions: General safety (00)
Removal
NOTICE:
After the timing chain has been removed, independently turning the camshaft or crankshaft beyond the allowable angle ranges shown in figure will cause interference between pistons and valves or between the valves themselves, which will cause damage to these parts and/or related parts.
Avoid turning each of the camshaft or crankshaft alone beyond the angle ranges shown in figure.

| 1. | Timing mark on VVT actuator | 4. | Key |
| 2. | Timing mark on camshaft timing sprocket | “a”: | 90° |
| 3. | Notch on cylinder head | “b”: | 15° |
NOTE:
If it is necessary to rotate the camshaft with the timing chain removed, rotate the camshaft after turning crankshaft counterclockwise 30 – 90° as shown in figure.
2)By turning crankshaft, align camshafts and crankshaft at specific position as follows.
a)Align both VVT actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket marks (1) with notches (2) of cylinder head respectively.
b)Position crankshaft sprocket key (3) at upside of crankshaft as shown in figure.
3)Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster (4).
4)Remove timing chain tensioner (5).
5)Remove timing chain guide (6).
Installation
1)Align both VVT actuator and exhaust sprocket marks (1) with notches (2) of cylinder head respectively.
3)Install timing chain while aligning painted plates (1) with timing marks (2) on VVT actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket.
4)Fit crankshaft timing sprocket to timing chain by aligning painted plate (3) of timing chain with matchmark (4) on crankshaft timing sprocket. Then install crankshaft timing sprocket with chain fitted to crankshaft.
5)Apply engine oil to sliding surface of timing chain guide (1) and install it as shown in figure.
Tighten guide bolts to specified torque.
Tighten guide bolts to specified torque.
6)Apply engine oil to sliding surface of chain tensioner (2) and install chain tensioner and spacer.
Tighten tensioner bolt to specified torque.
Tighten tensioner bolt to specified torque.
7)Check that marks (2) on VVT actuator and exhaust camshaft timing sprocket are in match with painted plates (1) of timing chain and matchmark (4) on crankshaft timing sprocket is in match with painted plate (3) of timing chain.
8)Screw in plunger (1) by turning body (2) in arrow direction and install a retainer (3) (1.4 mm (0.055 in.) diameter wire or the like) to hold plunger in place.
9)Install timing chain tensioner adjuster (1) with the retainer (2) installed.
Tighten timing chain tensioner adjuster bolts to specified torque, and then remove retainer from chain tensioner adjuster.
Tighten timing chain tensioner adjuster bolts to specified torque, and then remove retainer from chain tensioner adjuster.
10)Apply engine oil to timing chain, and then turn crankshaft clockwise 720°, and check that the following conditions are satisfied:
•Matchmark (1) on VVT actuator (2) is aligned with notch (3) of cylinder head.
•Matchmark (1) on exhaust camshaft timing sprocket (4) is aligned with notch (5) of cylinder head.
•Crankshaft sprocket key (6) is at the top position as shown in figure.
•Matchmark (1) on exhaust camshaft timing sprocket (4) is aligned with notch (5) of cylinder head.
•Crankshaft sprocket key (6) is at the top position as shown in figure.
