NOTE:
ESP® is registered trademark of Daimler AG.
ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) is an auxiliary function to enable the vehicle to stabilize while the vehicle is running, stopping or turning.
ESP® consists of the following functions.
ABS
Refer to ABS Description.
EBD
Refer to ABS Description.
Engine Torque-Up Control
This function controls the engine torque to release lock-up of the driving wheel(s) to maintain vehicle stability and steering when the lock-up occurs while engine brake is functioning with accelerator pedal released.
When ESP® hydraulic unit / control module detects the lock-up, the control module computes target minimum slip and target engine torque according to the vehicle speed based on the engine speed signal and engine torque signal from ECM, and demands engine torque up to ECM.
Traction Control
This function controls the engine and brakes to prevent the driving wheels from spinning at the time of starting and accelerating. Particularly, this function is helpful for safe driving on muddy or icy roads. When ESP® hydraulic unit / control module assembly detects wheel spinning using information from the yaw rate / G sensor assembly and wheel speed sensors, it lowers the engine torque by reducing throttle opening and retarding the ignition timing (M16A model) or reducing injection quantity (D16AA model). At the same time, brake is applied to the spinning wheel so that the engine torque can be transmitted to the other wheel.
Stability Control
This function maintains the vehicle stability by controlling the engine and brakes to prevent the vehicle from oversteering or understeering while turning.
When understeering occurs, this function lowers the engine torque and applies brake to the inner rear wheel to prevent the vehicle from moving outward. When oversteering occurs, this function applies brake to the outer front wheel to prevent the vehicle from moving inward.
Rear Drive Coupling Control (4WD Model)
This function controls 4WD control module for engagement degree of the rear drive coupling when ABS and ESP® are functioning.
ABS active:
4WD control module reduces degree of the rear drive coupling function to avoid decrease of vehicle stability affected by reduced suspension stroke.
ESP® active:
When oversteering occurs, 4WD control module distributes driving torque to front and rear wheels suitably to stabilize vehicle movement.
Hydraulic Brake Assist Control
This function controls brake fluid pressure to satisfy the pressure range for activation of ABS. When ESP® hydraulic unit / control module detects hard braking sensing variation of signal from brake master cylinder pressure sensor, pump motor in ESP® hydraulic unit / control module is functions to add brake pressure to the pressure generated by driver’s brake operation for activation of ABS.
ESP® Cooperative Control
This control maintains the vehicle stability by assisting driver to turn steering with appropriate torque to prevent the vehicle from wheel shifting to one side on µ-split road.
µ-split road means a road whose friction coefficient is different between the points in contact with right wheels and left wheels.
ESP® system is equipped with ESP® OFF switch. Refer to “ESP® OFF Switch” under ESP® Component Description. Traction control function, stability control function and ESP® cooperative control under accelerative condition can be stopped and resumed by ESP® OFF switch or SUZUKI scan tool. However, traction control function, stability control function and µ-split control function under accelerative condition resume automatically when ignition is set “OFF” and then “ON”.
Hill Hold Control (If Equipped)
This function prevents occurrence of creeping down which may occur when the driver shifts from the brake pedal depression to the accelerator pedal operation to restart moving forward the vehicle stopped on the up-slope. The ESP® control module activates each solenoid in the hydraulic unit to keep the brake pressure to each brake caliper, which is applied by brake pedal depression.
The vehicle remains stationary at the position for only 2 seconds without operation of the accelerator pedal. Operating the accelerator pedal within 2 seconds releases the brake pressure.
Hill Descent Control (4WD Model)
This function controls vehicle speed to the target speed when descending a slope without driver’s operation, regulating brake pressure for activation of the automatic brake. On the other hand, the driver can use accelerator pedal and brake pedal to control the vehicle for suitable speed.
ESP® hydraulic unit / control module estimates gradient of the slope based on signals from wheel speed sensor and yaw rate / G sensor, and computes target speed based on information about accelerator position signal, engine speed signal and brake light switch signal from ECM, and brake master cylinder pressure sensor signal in ESP® hydraulic unit / control module.
When hill descent control switch is “ON”, brake pressure is regulated to control the vehicle speed to the target speed. And, when hill descent control is functioning, while lock-up of the drive wheel(s) is detected frequently, ABS control is activated automatically.
While the automatic brake is in operation, ESP® control module turns the brake light ON.
Prefill Control
This function controls brake pressure to minimize clearance between brake pads and disc. Before activation of RBS control, pump motor functions to raise brake fluid pressure for quick response of the RBS control.
Emergency Stop Signal System Description
Emergency Stop Signal System activates hazard warning light when hard braking is applied. ESP® control module transmits emergency stop signal demand to BCM through CAN communication when the following conditions are met. BCM activates blinking of hazard warning light through turn signal circuit at double frequency of normal blinking.
•Vehicle is running at 55 km/h (34 mile/h) or higher speed.
•Hard braking is applied (deceleration is higher than specified value).
•ABS is activated.
