Anti-Corrosion Treatment

Precautions: Precautions for Body, Cab and Accessories · General safety (00)

CAUTION:
Failure to follow standard shop practices when performing the operations described below, particularly wearing eye protector, may result in a personal injury.
Follow standard shop practices when performing anti-corrosion treatment.
•Steel sheets used for panels of this vehicle are given the following rustproof treatments.
—Electro-galvanization on both surfaces for all steel sheets
—Cathodic electro-deposited primer coating for all steel sheets
—Rustproof wax coating on inside surfaces of door and side sill panels that are exposed to staying moisture
—Vinyl coating on floor panel underside and wheel house inside surfaces
—Sealer application to door panel hems, panel-to-panel joints in engine compartment and other similar panel portions
•The following describes the points that should be respected during the painting and rustproof coating involved in vehicle body repair operations.
—Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using any types of paint and sealing material.
—When replacing panels, repairing damage to them, or doing any other operations that disturb rustproof treatment of panels, it is essential to recoat affected surfaces with rustproof primers after thoroughly cleaning the areas.
—Sealer application and rustproof waxing should be performed only after application of rustproof primer.
—Apply sealer to the specified areas such as hems, overlap joints and seams during panel replacement and repair to prevent entry of dust and provide anti-corrosion barriers. Select a quality sealer that is adequate in flexibility and paint adhesion characteristic for application to these areas.
—To fill open joints, use a caulking material.
—When painting repaired areas, use techniques generally accepted for metal surface preparation, undercoating (vinyl coating) and color painting.
—For places where ordinary undercoating materials are difficult to use, such as door and side sill insides, use rustproof wax, a penetrative compound.
—When applying sealer during undercoating operation, avoid applying sealer to engine related components, strut/shock absorber mountings and rotating components. Also avoid blocking body drain holes with coating or sealing materials.
•Application of anti-corrosion and sealing materials should be performed in the following procedure:
a.Clean and prepare metal surface.
b.Apply primer.
c.Apply sealer (for any originally sealed areas).
d.Apply color paint to necessary areas such as hem flanges, exposed joints and underbody components.
e.Apply rustproof wax (penetrative compound).
f.Apply undercoating (vinyl coating).
•Plastic parts painting
Of plastic parts, those made of hard Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) can be coated with general acrylic lacquers in the following procedure without need for using primer.
a.Wash part to be painted in cleaning solvent.
b.Apply acrylic lacquer to part.
c.Dry part for the time specified by lacquer manufacturer. Proper drying temperature is between 60 and 70°C (140 and 158°F).
Reference
Parts made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) can be distinguished from those made of other plastic materials, such as polypropylene and vinyl, using the following method.
1)Cut small piece of material from invisible area of plastic part to be tested using a sharp blade.
2)Hold the cut piece in pincers and put it over a flame.
3)If the piece burns generating very black smoke while leaving residue suspending in air, the plastic part is made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). (If it is made of polypropylene, the smoke generated during burning is not distinctively visible.)
