2012 Jeep Wrangler JK Factory Service Manual 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case

MECHANISM, Brake Transmission Shift Interlock

DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) system prevents the driver from shifting out of Park unless the service brake pedal is actuated. This feature is intended to prevent unintended acceleration caused by pedal misapplication. The BTSI system is a ""Power to Release"" shift mechanism. The system is mechanically locked in Park until power is applied to the solenoid contained within the shifter. No brake interlock adjustment is required. In the event of a solenoid problem or power loss, the shifter cannot be moved from Park unless a manual override is actuated. A BTSI override mechanism is provided with this shifter to allow the vehicle to be shifted out of PARK in the event of an electrical failure.

LOCK AND UNLOCK

LOCK AND UNLOCK

The system locks mechanically the shifter into the PARK position. When the key is in the ON position (3) and the brake pedal is depressed, at least one half inch, the shifter is unlocked and will move into any position.

BTSI Override

BTSI Override

In the event of an electrical failure, the vehicle can be shifted out of PARK by using the following procedure:

  1. "Turn the key to the ACC or ON position.

  2.
  3. Using a small screwdriver remove the override cap from shifter bezel (right side of gate in D).

  4.
  5. Insert in hole a key or screwdriver and depress.

  6.
  7. While the override is depressed, move the shifter out of the PARK position.

  8.
  9. Re-insert the override cap on shifter bezel.

DIAGNOSTIC CHART

CONDITION

POSSIBLE CAUSE

CORRECTION

KEY WILL NOT ROTATE TO THE LOCK POSITION.

1. Misadjusted Park Lock cable.

1. Adjust Park Lock cable. (Refer to 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case/Automatic - NAG1/MECHANISM, Brake Transmission Shift Interlock - Adjustments)

2. Misadjusted gearshift cable.

2. Adjust gearshift cable. (Refer to 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case/Automatic - NAG1 - Standard Procedure)

3. Burrs on ignition key.

3. Remove burrs and cycle key several times to verify operation.

4. Binding or broken components.

4. Inspect system components and repair/replace components as necessary.

VEHICLE WILL NOT START UNLESS SHIFTER IS HELD FORWARD, OR REARWARD, OF THE PARK POSITION.

1. Misadjusted gearshift cable.

1. Adjust gearshift cable. (Refer to 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case/Automatic - NAG1 - Standard Procedure)

SYSTEM VERIFICATION

  1. Verify that the key can only be removed in the PARK position

  2.
  3. When the shift lever is in PARK, the ignition key cylinder should rotate freely from ACC to LOCK. When the shifter is in any other gear or neutral position, the ignition key cylinder should not rotate to the LOCK position.

  4.
  5. Shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the ACC position and the brake pedal is not depressed.

  6.
  7. Shifting out of PARK should not be possible while applying normal force on the shift lever and ignition key cylinder is in the ACC, ON, or START positions unless the foot brake pedal is depressed approximately 1/2 inch (12mm).

  8.
  9. Shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the LOCK position, regardless of the brake pedal position.

  10.
  11. Shifting between any gears, NEUTRAL or into PARK may be done without depressing foot brake pedal with ignition switch in ACC, ON, or START positions.

  12.

ADJUSTMENTS

ADJUSTMENTS

The park interlock cable is part of the brake/shift lever interlock system. Correct cable adjustment is important to proper interlock operation. The gear shift and park lock cables must both be correctly adjusted in order to shift out of PARK.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

  1. Remove floor console as necessary for access to the park lock cable. (Refer to 23 - Body/Interior/CONSOLE, Center - Removal) .

  2.
  3. Shift the transmission into the PARK position.

  4.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Be sure ignition key cylinder is in the LOCK position. Cable will not adjust correctly in any other position.

    NOTE:

If the key will not turn to the LOCK position, pull up on the cable lock button and manually move the cable in and out until the key can be turned to the LOCK position.

  6.
  7. Pull cable lock button up to release cable, if necessary.

  8.
  9. Remove and discard the cable adjuster lock pin, if a new cable is being installed.

  10.
  11. Ensure that the cable is free to self-adjust by pushing cable rearward and releasing.

  12.
  13. Push lock button down until it snaps in place. The lock should be 1-2mm below the surface of the cylinderical portion of the cable adjustment housing.

  14.

BTSI FUNCTION CHECK

  1. Verify removal of ignition key allowed in PARK position only.

  2.
  3. When the shift lever is in PARK, the ignition key cylinder should rotate freely LOCK position. When the shifter is in any other position, the ignition key should not rotate to the LOCK position.

  4.

  12.
  13. The floor shifter lever and gate positions should be in alignment with all transmission detent positions.

  14.
  15. Engine starts must be possible with shifter lever in PARK or NEUTRAL gate positions only. Engine starts must not be possible in any other gate positions other than PARK or NEUTRAL.
