PLATE, Brake Backing

REMOVAL

REMOVAL

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

    2.  
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

    3.  
  3. Remove the disc brake caliper adapter (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ADAPTER, Disc Brake Caliper - Removal) .

  4. Remove the disc brake rotor, (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ROTOR, Brake - Removal) .

    5.  
  5. Remove the wheel speed sensor (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Electrical/SENSOR, Wheel Speed - Removal) .

    6.  
  6. Lock out the front brake cable at the equalizer.

    7.  
  7. Remove the rear parking brake cable from the equalizer.

    8.  
  8. Remove the parking brake cable from the brake shoe lever at the axle.

    9.  
  9. Remove the axle shaft, refer to Section 03 - Differential and Driveline/Rear Axle/SHAFT, Axle - Removal.

  10. Tap the support plate from the axle shaft.

  11. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.

  12. Remove the support plate from the axle seal plate.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION



NOTE:

After parking brake lining replacement, it is recommended that the parking brake system be conditioned prior to use. This is done by making one stop from 25 mph on dry pavement or concrete using light to moderate force on the parking brake lever.

  1. Install the support plate on the axle seal plate.

  2. Reassemble the rear park brake shoes.

    3.  
  3. Install the support plate on the axle shaft.

    4.  
  4. Install the axle shaft to the axle, refer to Section 03 - Differential and Driveline/Rear Axle/SHAFT, Axle - Installation.

  5. Reconnect the brake cable to the park brake shoe lever behind the support plate.

    6.  
  6. Install the rear park brake cable at the equalizer.

    7.  
  7. Remove the lockout on the front park brake cable.

    8.  
  8. Install the rear wheel speed sensor. (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Electrical/SENSOR, Wheel Speed - Installation) .

  9. Adjust the rear brake shoes (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Parking Brake/SHOES, Parking Brake - Adjustments) .

  10. Install the disc brake rotor (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ROTOR, Brake - Installation) .

  11. Install the disc brake caliper adapter. (Refer to 05 - Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ADAPTER, Disc Brake Caliper - Installation) .

    12.  
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly (Refer to 22 - Tires and Wheels/Wheels - Standard Procedure) .

    13.  
  13. Check and fill the rear axle fluid.

  14. Lower the vehicle.

    15.  
  15. Check the operation of the park brake system.
