Powertrain Control Module

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1995-97 Protege 1.5L (Z5D) and 1.8L (BPD) Engines

The control module is usually located under the front console.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the rear console.
  3. Remove the ashtray.
  4. On manual transaxles only, remove the shift knob.
  5. Remove the front console to gain access to the module.
  6. Remove the ECM mounting bolts/nuts, and disconnect the module electrical connectors.

    To install:

  7. Position the module, and install the mounting nuts and bolts.
  8. Install the front console.
  9. If equipped, install the shift knob.
  10. Install the ashtray.
  11. Install the rear console.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
1995 MX3 1.6L (B6E) and 1.8L (K8) Engines

The control module is usually located behind the center console side trim panels.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove both center console side trim panels to gain access to the module.
  3. Remove the module mounting bolts/nuts, and disconnect the module electrical connectors.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
626 and MX6 2.0L (FS) and 2.5L (KL) Engines

The control module is usually located behind the center console.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the center console assembly, by pulling it forward to disengage the six clips, to gain access to the module.
  3. Remove the module mounting bolts/nuts and disconnect the module electrical connectors.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Millenia 2.3L (KJS) and 2.5L (KLD) Engines

The control module is usually located behind the center console.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the mounting nuts for the rear console box, and remove the rear console box.
  3. Remove the center panel and the left and right undercovers.
  4. Remove the module cover.
  5. Remove the module bracket screw and nut.
  6. Remove the rear heater duct fasteners.
  7. Separate the rear heater duct to both sides.
  8. Disconnect the module connector, and remove the module from the vehicle.

    To install:

  9. Position the module, and engage the connector.
  10. Assemble the rear heater duct, and attach the fasteners.
  11. Install the module bracket nut and screw.
  12. Install the left and right undercovers.
  13. Install the center panel.
  14. Install the rear console box.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
1993-95 RX7 1.3L (13B) and 1995 929 3.0L (JE-ZE) Engines

The control module is usually located behind the passenger side scuff plate.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the passenger side scuff plate and front side trim panels to gain access to the module.
  3. Remove the module mounting bolts/nuts, and disconnect the module electrical connectors.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
1993-94 323 1.6L (B6E), MX3 1.8L (K8, BPD) and Protege 1.8L (BPD) Engines

The control is usually located behind the center console driver and passenger side panels.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the passenger and driver side cover walls from the center console unit.
  3. Remove the module mounting bolts/nuts and disconnect the module electrical connectors.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Miata 1.6L (B6-ZE) and 1.8L (BPD) Engines

The control module is usually located beneath the passenger seat or floor mat.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. On the 1993 models, move the passenger seat forward.
  3. On the 1994-97 models, lift the passenger side floor mat.
  4. Remove the module protective cover.
  5. Remove the module mounting bolts/nuts and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  6. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
