Transfer Case Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  4. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe.
  5. Unbolt the transfer case assembly and remove by sliding it off the rear driveshaft. Do not let the rear driveshaft hang; suspend it from a frame piece.

    To install:

  6. Install the transfer case assembly to the transaxle. Install the rear driveshaft to the transfer case output shaft.
  7. Tighten the transfer case to transaxle bolts to 18–22 ft. lbs. (25–29 Nm).
  8. Install the exhaust pipe using a new gasket.
  9. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
Eclipse
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
  4. Support the driveshaft with wire or string and remove the transfer case from the transaxle.

    To install:

  5. Slide the driveshaft into the transfer case and install the transfer case to the transaxle. Torque the bolts to 40–44 ft. lbs. (54–59 Nm).
  6. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  7. Install the engine undercover.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
