Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve

The small filter element (on models so equipped) located on the inner back right side of the air cleaner base should be changed at the same interval as the air cleaner element.

If equipped, check the PCV valve to see if it is free and not gummed up. The PCV valve is located in the intake manifold beside the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, and connected by a hose from the #2 and #4 cylinder rocker cover. To check the valve, remove it from the engine and work the valve by sticking a screwdriver in the crankcase side of the valve. It should move. It is possible to clean the PCV valve by soaking it in a solvent and blowing it out with compressed air. This can restore the valve to some level of operating order. This should be used only as an emergency measure. Otherwise the valve should be replaced. Under normal conditions the PCV valve should be replaced every 30 months or 30,000 miles (50,000 km), whichever occurs first. The PCV hose filter and secondary air cleaner (if equipped) should be serviced at the same times as the PCV valve. Refer to Section 4 for details.
