The ignition switch is mounted to the steering column using shear bolts. These
bolts are constructed so that the head is sheared off when the bolt is tightened.
For this reason removal of the ignition switch is rather complicated.
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the steering wheel as previously outlined.
- Disconnect the steering shaft from the universal joint (located near the
steering gear box) by loosening the locking bolt.
- Remove the steering shaft installing bolt from the instrument panel.
- Pull the steering shaft assembly from the hole in floor board and remove
the assembly from the car.
- Loosen the screws holding the column cover and hazard knob, then pull the
steering shaft out of the column cover.
- Drill into the shaft of the shear bolts and extract them with a screw extractor.
Remove the switch.
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
NOTE: Be sure to use new shear bolts to install the ignition
switch.
