Camshaft, Bearings and Lifters

Removal & Installation

2.0L DOHC Engine and 2.5L DOHC Engine
Right Side

To Remove:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative Battery Cable

  3. Loosen the variable valve timing solenoid valve assembly (2.5L DOHC Engine) and intake camshaft cap bolts equally, in alphabetical sequence shown.
  4. Remove the variable valve timing solenoid valve assembly, intake camshaft cap, and camshaft.

  5. Loosen the exhaust camshaft cap bolts equally, in alphabetical sequence shown.
  6. Remove the exhaust camshaft cap and camshaft.

Note: Arrange the camshaft caps in order so that they can be installed in their original positions.

To Install:

Note: Apply engine oil to cylinder head at camshaft bearing location before installing the camshaft. Install the camshaft so that each valve is close to or in contact with "base circle" of cam lobe. When the camshafts are positioned as shown in the figure, camshafts need to be rotated to align with the timing belt during installation. Camshaft (RH) need not be rotated when set at position. Intake camshaft (LH) must be rotated 80°clockwise and exhaust camshaft (LH) 45°counterclockwise.

  1. Apply fluid packing to camshaft cap mating surface.

    CAUTION
Do not apply too much fluid. Excess packing may come out and flow toward the oil seal, resulting in oil leaks.

  2. Install cap on camshaft after applying engine oil to cap bearing surface.

  3. Tighten the camshaft cap and oil control valve assembly (2.5L DOHC Engine) in at two stages to specified torque.

  4. Tighten cap on the exhaust side. After tightening cap, ensure the camshaft rotates only slightly.
  5. Press seal onto front end of camshaft.

Note: Use a new oil seal and apply grease to seal lips.

  6. Install or connect the following:

  7. Tighten the rocker cover bolt in alphabetical sequence shown and to specified torque.
  8. Install or connect the following:

To Remove:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative Battery Cable

CAUTION
Do not remove the oil seal unless necessary. Do not scratch the journal surface when removing oil seal.

To Install:

  1. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the camshaft journals
  2. Apply liquid gasket on the camshaft cap.

Note: Apply a 3 mm (0.12 inch) diameter bead of liquid gasket along edge (2) of the camshaft cap (3) mating surface.

  3. Temporarily tighten bolts (g) through (j) in sequence.
  4. Install the valve rocker assembly.

  5. Tighten bolts (a) through (h) in sequence.

  6. Tighten the TORX bolts (i) through (n) in sequence.

  7. Tighten bolts (o) through (v) in sequence.

  8. Tighten bolts (w) and (x) in sequence.
  9. Apply a thin coat of grease to oil seal lips, and then install the new oil seal on camshaft.
