Removal & Installation

Right Side

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Ground cable from battery

     Engine Harness Connector

     Engine Harness Bracket

   • Engine harness connector with bracket from air cleaner upper cover
   • Air intake duct
   • Air cleaner case
   • Ignition coil connector
   • Ignition coil
   • PCV hose from rocker cover
   • Rocker cover mounting bolts
   • Rocker cover
   • Front exhaust pipe
   • Timing belt
   • Camshaft sprocket
   • Intake manifold
   • Bolt connecting A/C compressor bracket to cylinder head (turbo models)
   • Camshaft

   • Cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown, leaving bolts (A) and (D) partially installed to prevent the head from falling
   • Cylinder head and other bolts
   • Cylinder head gasket

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • New cylinder head gasket

   • Cylinder head with the bolts in sequence
     1. First Pass - Torque to: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     2. Second Pass - Torque to: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm) – then back off 180 degrees, then an additional 180 degrees in reverse sequence
     3. Third Pass - Torque to: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) plus 80 – 90 degrees – then an additional 40 – 45 degrees
     4. Forth Pass – bolts (A) and (B) an additional 40 – 45 degrees
   • Camshaft
   • A/C compressor bracket to cylinder head (turbo models)
   • Intake manifold
   • Camshaft sprocket
   • Timing belt
   • Front exhaust pipe
   • Rocker cover
   • Rocker cover mounting bolts
   • Ignition coil connector
   • Ignition coil
   • PCV hose from rocker cover

   • Engine harness connector with bracket from air cleaner upper cover

Left Side

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Battery cable
   • Battery and battery carrier

     Washer Motor Connector

   • Washer motor connectors

     Washer Bottle Bolts

   • Washer tank mounting bolts
   • Washer tank (set aside)
   • Ignition coil connector
   • Ignition coil
   • PCV hose from rocker cover
   • Rocker cover bolts
   • Rocker cover
   • Front exhaust pipe
   • Timing belt
   • Camshaft sprocket
   • Intake manifold
   • Bolt connecting A/C compressor bracket to cylinder head (turbo models)
   • Camshaft

   • Cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown, leaving bolts (A) and (D) partially installed to prevent the head from falling
   • Cylinder head and other bolts
   • Cylinder head gasket

To Install:
