Automatic Transmission Assembly

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Open and support front hood.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Battery ground cable
   • Air intake duct (non-turbo models)
   • Air cleaner case (non-turbo models)
   • Air cleaner case stay (non-turbo models)
   • Intercooler (turbo models)
   • Front, center and rear exhaust pipes and muffler (non-turbo models)
   • Center and rear exhaust pipes and muffler (turbo models)
   • Transmission harness connector
   • Transmission ground terminal
   • Starter
4. Install special tool torque converter clutch case (498277200)
5. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Pitching stopper
   • Service hole plug
   • Torque converter clutch to drive plate bolts
   • Remaining torque converter clutch to drive plate bolts using ST while rotating the engine (ST 499977100 – non-turbo models; 499977300 – turbo models)

     CAUTION
     Be careful not to drop bolts into torque converter clutch housing.

   • ATF level gauge

   CAUTION
   Plug opening to prevent entry of foreign particles into transmission fluid.

6. Install special tool (41099AA010 and 41099AA020) engine support and bracket.
7. Remove upper bell housing bolts.
8. Safely raise and support the vehicle
9. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Under cover

   • Heat shield
   • ATF drain plug to remove ATF

   • ATF cooler hoses from pipes of transmission side, and remove ATF level gauge guide
   • Propeller shaft
   • Shift select cable
   • Stabilizer link from transverse link
   • Ball joint of transverse link to housing bolt
   • Spring pins and separate front drive shafts from each side of the transmission
10. Place transmission jack under transmission.
11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bell housing lower nuts

      CAUTION
      Make sure that the support plates of transmission jack don't touch the oil pan.

    • Transmission rear crossmember from vehicle
    • Transmission

    CAUTION
    Move transmission and torque converter as a unit away from engine.

12. Separate transmission assembly and rear cushion rubber.

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Rear cushion rubber to transmission
     1. Torque to: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
   • Special tool 498277200 to torque converter clutch case
2. Raise transmission with transmission jack.
3. Install or connect the following:
   • Transmission onto engine by engaging them at splines

   • Transmission rear crossmember
     1. T1: Torque to: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     2. T2: Torque to: 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
4. Remove transmission jack.

5. Install lower Bell housing bolts.
   • Torque to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove special tool from torque converter clutch case.

   CAUTION
   Be careful not to drop the ST into the torque converter clutch case when removing (ST 498277200 STOPPER SET). Be careful not to drop bolts into torque converter clutch housing.

8. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter
   • Upper bell housing bolts
     1. Torque to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
   • Torque converter clutch to drive plate
     1. Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
   • Plug onto service hole
   • Pitching stopper
     1. T1: Torque to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     2. T2: Torque to: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
9. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
10. Install or connect the following:
    • Front drive shafts into transmission
    • New drive spring pin into chamfered hole of drive shaft
    • Ball joint into housing
    • Stabilizer link to transverse link, and temporarily tighten bolts
      1. T1: Torque to: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
      2. T2: Torque to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)

      CAUTION
      Discard loosened self-locking nut and replace with a new one.

    • Shift select cable onto select lever

    • ATF level gauge guide, and connect ATF cooler hoses to pipe
    • Propeller shaft

    • Heat shield cover
    • Rear exhaust pipe and muffler assembly
    • Front, center and rear exhaust pipes and muffler (non-turbo models)
    • Center and rear exhaust pipes and muffler (turbo models)
    • Under cover
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install or connect the following:
    • ATF level gauge
    • Transmission harness connectors
    • Transmission ground terminal
    • Air cleaner case stay (non-turbo models)
      1. Torque to: 11.6 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
    • Air intake duct (non-turbo models)
    • Intercooler (turbo models)
    • Battery ground cable
13. Fill ATF up to the middle of the "cold" side on level gauge by using the gauge hole.
14. Check select lever operation.
15. Check the ATF level.
16. Road test the vehicle.
