The Impreza uses a 5.3i type ABS with a hydraulic control unit, ABS control module, valve relay and a motor relay as a single unit (ABSCM & H/U).
The ABS electrically controls the brake fluid pressure to each wheel, which enables a driver to maintain directional control. The system prevents each wheel from locking during braking on road surfaces with variable friction /traction attributes.
Note: If the ABS system fails to operate, a warning light is illuminated to indicate the ABS is malfunctioning. To ensure a safe level of braking performance (similar to a conventional brake system), a fail-safe system will simultaneously activate.
