Repair and Inspection Required after Accident

Precautions: Precautions for Air Bag System Service · Precautions for Handling and Storage of Air Bag System Components · Precautions for Disposal of Air Bag and Seat Belt Pretensioner · Precautions for Restraint · General safety (00)

WARNING:
Failure to properly check and repair a vehicle that has been involved in an accident can result in unsafe operating conditions.
•For any vehicle that was involved in an accident, check all air bag system components including the electrical harness and the areas where they are mounted, even if the air bag system was not activated. Any components deformed or otherwise damaged must be replaced.
•Never use air bag system parts from another vehicle model.
•Do not repair the following parts.
Replace any of them that are found faulty.
—Driver / passenger air bag (inflator) modules
—Knee air bag (inflator) module
—Driver-side / passenger-side side-air bag (inflator) modules
—Driver-side / passenger-side curtain air bag (inflator) modules
—Driver-side / passenger-side front seat belt pretensioners
—Left-side / right-side rear seat belt pretensioners
—Driver-side / passenger-side forward impact sensors
—Driver-side / passenger-side front side-impact sensors
—Driver-side / passenger-side rear side-impact sensors
—SDM
—Contact coil
—Air bag wire harnesses (in main harness, instrument panel harness and floor harness) and seat harness
•Perform all repairs in a manner which assures that the vehicle’s original configuration is restored.
•The SDM that has been involved in an accident severe enough to cause deployment of air bags is not guaranteed to provide its original performance.
Never use an SDM that has been involved in an air bag deployment accident.
Accident with Deployment / Activation – Component Replacement
Replace the following components when driver and passenger air bags are deployed.
•Driver and passenger air bag (inflator) modules
•Knee air bag (inflator) module
•Driver-side / passenger-side front seat belt pretensioners
•Left-side / right-side rear seat belt pretensioners
•SDM
•Driver-side / passenger-side forward impact sensors
•Instrument panel
Replace the following components when side-air bag and curtain air bag are deployed.
•Side-air bag (inflator) module
•Driver-side / passenger-side front seat belt pretensioners
•Left-side / right-side rear seat belt pretensioners
•Curtain air bag (inflator) module
•Driver-side / passenger-side front side-impact sensor
•Driver-side / passenger-side rear side-impact sensor
•SDM
Accident with or without Deployment / Activation – Component Inspections
NOTE:
For discrimination of market code, refer to Identification Plate.
Check the following air bag system components after any crash, whether air bag system was activated or not. If any faulty conditions is found in the following checks, replace faulty component.
•Steering column and steering lower shaft
—Check for length, damage and bend according to Steering Column Inspection.
•Steering column bracket
—Check for damage and bend according to Steering Column Inspection.
