Knee Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation (9 or 11-Channel Air Bag System)

Failure to take proper precautions when performing service on the knee air bag (inflator) module can result in personal injury or non-activation of the air bag in the event of a collision.
•Never disassemble or repair an air bag (inflator) module. If any abnormal condition is found, replace the module with a new one.
•Carefully read Precautions for Air Bag System Service, Precautions for Handling and Storage of Air Bag System Components and Precautions for Disposal of Air Bag and Seat Belt Pretensioner and follow all of the instructions provided.

NOTICE:
An air bag (inflator) module that has been dropped may not operate correctly.
Never use an air bag (inflator) module that has been dropped. Replace the module with a new one.
NOTE:
Refer to Repair and Inspection Required after Accident before replacing a deployed air bag.
Removal
2)Remove steering column hole cover (1) and driver inside lower cover (2).
CAUTION:
If steering column hole cover and driver inside lower cover are reused when installing knee air bag, the knee air bag function could be affected or the covers broke into pieces at the time of deployment.
Replace steering column hole cover and driver inside lower cover with new ones once they are removed.
3)Remove knee air bag (inflator) module bolts (1), and then remove knee air bag (inflator) module (2).
4)Disconnect harness clamp from knee air bag (inflator) module.
5)Disconnect knee air bag (inflator) module connector (3) as shown in figure.
a)Release lock button (4).
b)Disconnect knee air bag (inflator) module connector with lock released.
Installation
Reverse removal procedure noting the following points.
•Fit tabs (1) of passenger air bag (inflator) module (2) to passenger air bag door (3) securely.
•Lock connector for knee air bag (inflator) module securely.
•Check that harness is not pinched or exposed outside.
•Fit tabs (1) of knee air bag (inflator) module (2) to steering support member holes.
•Tighten knee air bag (inflator) module bolts (3) to specified torque.
•Install new steering column hole cover (1) and new driver inside lower cover (2).
CAUTION:
•Enable air bag system.
•Lock connector for knee air bag (inflator) module securely.
•Check that harness is not pinched or exposed outside.
•Fit tabs (1) of knee air bag (inflator) module (2) to steering support member holes.
•Tighten knee air bag (inflator) module bolts (3) to specified torque.
•Install new steering column hole cover (1) and new driver inside lower cover (2).
If steering column hole cover and driver inside lower cover are reused when installing knee air bag, the knee air bag function could be affected or the covers broke into pieces at the time of deployment.
Replace steering column hole cover and driver inside lower cover with new ones once they are removed.
